New and very scared - New York City

in Anal Cancer #1

Thank you for reading this. I have just been diagnosed HIV positive and have tested positive for HPV, though they have not told me which strain. I do have anal warts, and all the symptoms which seem to point to a possibility of cancer. I am desperately trying to find a doctor in the NYC who specializes in this field, because the physician I am with does not seem to have expertise with this. They did an anal pap smear, but I don't have the results of that yet. Can anyone tell me how to find a physician in NYC who specializes in this? Thank you.

    Steve, I'm sorry your symptoms have brought you to this site.  There is a doctor in New York City named Dr. Stephen Goldstone who specializes in treatment of anal/rectal diseases.  I do not have any first-hand knowledge of him, I just know that he treats many people with anal cancer, etc.  I have posted a link below that will take you to a site that has information about him.  I would suggest at least checking into him and seeing if he sounds like the kind of doctor you are looking for.  We have another male member on this site who lives in NYC.  Once I search through the posts and find him, I will let you know his user name.  Perhaps you can send him a personal message and get some good information on other doctors in the NYC area.  We also have a few other members in your area--perhaps they will offer some suggestions.

    I'm glad you are seeking a doctor with expertise in this field.  Many doctors are just not well-informed about anal cancer and how to detect it.  I, like so many others on this site, was initially diagnosed with bleeding hemorrhoids.  Lucky for me, I was overdue for my first screening colonoscopy and was referred to a colorectal surgeon for that, not for the rectal bleeding.  After I told her I had been having bleeding, she took one look at me in her office with an anoscope and did a digital rectal exam and told me she was sure I had cancer.  A colonoscopy with biopsy 2 days later confirmed her diagnosis.  So, getting yourself to a specialist is wise.

    I will be back with the user name of our other member.  I wish you all the best and if it turns out you do have anal cancer, we are here for you.  This is a great place for support and information.

    You can go to Sloan Kettering if your insurance is accepted, NY Hospital, NYU, Beth Israel, Mount Sinai; there's no shortage of doctors or hospitals here. Don't know if you're interested but a good resource might be the Gay Men's Health Crisis, @ 1 800 243-7692. I can tell you that they're very helpful, have a lot of services and may be able to steer you in the right direction, if not refer you to an actual physician. If you want to start with a private gastroenterologist, go to Gotham Gastroenterology on 74th and Third. (You haven't said where in NY you are. NYC is a very big place).

    Thank you so very much. I really appreciate it. It is shocking to me to see how much I need to keep pushing information and direction to the "experts". They were not even going to do the anal pap smear until I asked for it. I hope to get the results of the anal pap tomorrow. I appreciate your kindness in replying to me very much.

    You are quite welcome.  I hope you find some of this information helpful to you.  Hopefully, your anal pap will come back negative for any cancer cells.  Please let us know.

    MY DOCTOR

    MY DOCTOR AT MSK IS MARTIN WEISER, BUT IN ORDER TO GET INTO MSK I HAD TO SHOW THAT I HAD A CANCER DIAGNOSIS BY PROVIDING BIOPSY AND SCAN RESULTS. IT TOOK ABOUT TWO AND A HALF WEEKS AFTER GETTING DIAGNOSIS. THE PATIENCE WAS WORTH IT. THE DOCTORS I HAD PRIOR UP HERE IN WESTCHESTER TOLD ME I NEEDED SURGERY RIGHT AWAY. I AM SO GLAD I DID NOT LISTEN TO THEM.
