I was diagnosed at age 26

I was diagnosed at age 26  with poorly differentiated insular variant with patches of follicular in there too. I think my tumor was 5cm That was 1997. I'm 16 years free and NED. I had surgery and lots of RAI, but little side effects other than the adjustment period with correct hormones. That probably doesn't help much other than to offer hope.

    Wishing you the best...

Thanks for your insight. My Dr at University of VA seem to think poorly differentiated is very aggressive. Since i wrote this either my cancer has returned or my first surgen did not get all the thyroid. I had a 2cm something removed a week ago. The needle biopsy said it was thyroid cells no cancer but after the operation they said it was follicular cancer. In my first operation they said it was hurthle.  I am concered but will have the ROI soon.

I Thought You Turned Out Not Have Thyroid Cancer

    dhunt64817,

So you did unfortunately turn out to have throid cancer? I just sent you a private message after I read your post from January 2013 where you said it keeps you up at night, that after you were diagnosed with hurthle and follicular thyroid cancer, after your thyroid was removed you said they found *NO* cancer.

    poor differentiated thyroid

After my surgery in January they told me the left side of my throid was cancer free. The earlier surgury for a nodule removal (4cm)said I had poor differentiated hurthle cell cancer. About a month ago they told me I had a 2cm growth in the thyroid bed. The surgen who did the first two surgeries said he left some tissue around the nevers to the vocal cords. But not 2cm?

I had a needle biopsy on the mass and it said it was just thyroid tissue. I had a third surgery and they removed and told me it was fillicular cancer. Now they want to use beam radiation to treat what ever is left.

This has been very difficult as first I had hurthle cell cancer,no cancer, and now follicular cancer.  I am told my cancer is very aggressive so I must have these treatments. But no one will tell me what type or stage of cancer I have. They say it is aggressive and must be treated in kind. So they want to do 6 weeks of beam radiation followed by radio active iodine. Which seems **** back wards to me.

I am not sure anyone knows what I have or what treatment I should have other than to say try them all.

    You Must Be *So* Scared!

You must be *SO* scared,I'm really sorry! You do know what type of thyroid cancer you have, you said you were diagnosed with follicular thyroid cancer. And why won't any doctor or nurse let you know the stage of your cancer? You have every right to know it!
