VITAMIN D
Story at-a-glance From Dr Mercola's website
- An optimal vitamin D level is critically important in minimizing your cancer risk; a study of menopausal women showed that maintaining vitamin D serum levels of 40ng/ml cut overall cancer risk by 77 percent
- GrassrootsHealth founder Carole Baggerly believes 90 percent of ordinary breast cancer is related to vitamin D deficiency; in fact, breast cancer has been described as a “vitamin D deficiency syndrome”
- Vitamin D can stop breast cancer cells from spreading by replenishing E-cadherin, one of the glue-like components giving structure to those cells
- In addition to being a strong cancer preventative, vitamin D is crucial for pregnant women and their babies, lowering risk for preterm birth, low birth weight, and C-section; 80 percent of pregnant women have inadequate vitamin D levels
- The most important factor is having your vitamin D serum level tested every 6 months, as people vary widely in their response to ultraviolet exposure or oral supplementation; your serum level should be kept between 50 and 70 ng/ml for optimal health

Yes you are absolutely correct thats why we need to take the vitamin supplements of D3. Unfortunately even when not on chemo no one gets enough sun anymore with fear of melanoma. To be in optimal health the level of Vitamin D should be 70. Unfortunately everyone I met who had breast anc colon cancers were below 30...some even below 20.

I can't be in the sun now because I am having radiation treatments and I am not supposed to take any vitamins now either. I will be able to once I am done with radiation though. Or, I think so.

Only certain Vitamins are not allowed during treatment. Vitamin D3 is not one of them. Ask your Doctor.

Vitamin D
I was diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency (serum level was 19) osteoporosis and breast cancer at about the same time. I've been taking one pill of 2000 i.u. of D3 and a calcium supplement that has 400 i.u. twice a day. My oncologist also suggested I take a multivitamin pill. With all 3 of those will I be getting too much vitamin D?

I personally take between 5,000 and 10,000 IU's per day of D3.
Look at it this way...if you sit in the sun for 30 minutes...you get 20,000 IU's of vitamin D3 so 2,000 isn't enough.
As far as calcium is concerned....I would get it from food. Bok choy is really good to get calcium from. Taking pills for calcium can cause other problems like Kidney stones...which are NO fun!!! I know first hand.
Secondly, whe you take Vitamin D3 you need to take K2. Jarrows makes a good one. Its called MK-7 by Jarrows.
K2 helps the body absorb the D3.
I hope this helps...
Take good care!!! ))
