Obgyn tells me I need to see GI ASAP.

Hi, I have been having anal itching for a while now atleast a year. I have had a couple of growths in my anus that I thought were hemmoroids After having my baby.  Two years ago when I saw my obgyn she said hemorroids r normal after having kids so I didn't take it seriously and neither did she because she didn't actually examine the rectum. I just  went to see her and i mentioned to her that my hemmoroids r very itchy, I've also been having a lot of bleeding where the toilet bowl water turns red, and I have also been feeling extremely fatigue. A tiredness that I can't explain. She decideds to do a digital rectal exam looks with a light and then tells me with a serious face that I need to see a GI ASAP. She tells me those r not hemmoroids. I'm a bit nervous because I don't know what these soft things coming out of my anus are. I also feel pressure in the area but no actual pain. I have had both constipation and diarhea problems for the past two years. Can someone tell me if it sounds like anal cancer? I go to see GI April 29. Very worried!

    Hi. I would say that you need to see a colorectal surgeon asap. Try not to worry, but don't let this go. If it is anal cancer, there is a very high cure rate. Go to a very reputable colorectal surgeon and have the growths biopsied. Hang in there.

    I don't believe a GI doctor would be the best choice, given your symptoms.  I would strongly urge you to make an appt. ASAP with a colorectal surgeon.  You should be seen by someone who can do a thorough exam (including digital rectal exam and anoscopy) and biopsy to determine if these growths are cancerous.  Rectal bleeding and fatigue were two of the symptoms that I experienced, along with years of chronic constipation.  I also had a feeling of not being completely emptied out after a bowel movement.  You need a correct diagnosis.  Anal cancer is often missed or misdiagnosed, delaying appropriate treatment.  The good news is anal cancer can be very successfully treated.  I hope it turns out that you do not have cancer, but if so, we are here for you.  Let us know what you find out.

    Hi Yiyi, I am new to this site, and have never posted anything as of yet, just looked at information and things others had to say so far, but i need to tell you after reading your post, that is exactly how my anal cancer was found! Please dont be alarmed, i had these same things for about 2 years before i found out it was not hemmoroids! My docs are confident that the chemo and radiation will cure this, there is a high cure rate for this kind of slow growing tumor, so stay strong and think positive.

    Thank u so much for all your Responses. I will go to GI only because the appointment is coming up on Monday. i plan on following up with a colorectal surgeon. I will keep u all posted with what they tell me.

    I agree with martha

    It won't hurt to see the GI. But anal cancer is so rare, my GI doctor had never seen it before mine and he had been practicing for 25 years. (How many cases perhaps did he miss?) I was stage III at diagnosis so he couldn't miss my fairly large tumor after I passed a great deal of blood and called him. He freaked out. No kidding. He told me I needed surgery right away. This was absolutely terrible advice. So stay close to this board. I did and it helped me find my way.

    Today I went to the GI office

    Today I went to the GI office and I saw an Aprn. The good news is that she says she could not see anything, but because of the rectal bleeding she is sending me to get a colonoscopy this Friday (By the way showered today and still felt the lumps) And she also wondered why with my symptoms, my obgyn did not recommend a colorectal surgeon. So is the colonoscopy done by a GI doctor a good step? Will they be as good as seeing a colorectal surgeon. Now I'm worried they will miss something. I hope it's all ok and that it's just hemmoroids. I hope all is good with everyone. And since getting on this site I have prayed for everyone and had u all in my heart although I don't personally know u. Thanks u for all the information provided.

    Hi. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. First question, what is aN APM? Never heard of that. I would recommend that you see a colorectal surgeon right away. My GI doctor, who was supposedly the best here, totally missed the cancer. A colorectal surgeon will do a biopsy of the masses. That is what is needed. I am not sure why you haven't seen one yet? It is good that you remain optimistic, but continue to pursue this to be sure. Take care.

    I agree with Marynb.  You really need to be seen ASAP by a colorectal doctor.  How is it possible that this Aprn who saw you did not "see anything" when you say that you still felt the lumps when you showered?  I think this just demonstrates how easily anal cancer can be missed.  It can also be missed on a colonoscopy, as that test is not meant for viewing the anal canal.  This happens SO many times.  You really do need to see a colorectal doctor and have a digital rectal exam and anoscope by a specialist.  I cannot stress that enough.  Anoscope is designed specifically to view the anal canal.  While it will also be good to get the colonoscopy to rule out any source of bleeding further up in your colon, do not rely on that test alone to rule out anal cancer.

    I had a flex sigmoidoscopy

    I had a flex sigmoidoscopy done by a gastroenterologist who collected tissue for biopsy.  I chose to have no sedation.  It was a little uncomfortable as she turned the scope to get a good look at the tumor.  I saw it.  That was weird.  That was how my diagnosis was first done.  I then followed up with a surgical biopsy.  I can't see any reason to do a colonoscopy

    colonoscopy not good enough

    you have to see a colorectal surgeon.... i had a colonoscopy and it said no cancer!!!!! wrong....i went to a proctologist ( the anal canal is his specific area) and he missed it for 10 months or more....small town doc ....i had ulcer on outside of anus and he still did not biopsy it.... i finally went to larger town with a great colorectal surgeon who knew what it was by looking at anoscope but put me in hospital to do the biopsy....this cancer is missed sooooo often..... good luck.... sephie

    I went and had my colonoscopy. It showed that I was clear. Just hemorroids. I set up an appointment with a colorectal surgeon just for peace of mind. I need to make sure that it is just hemorroids. Thank you for all your great advice.
