Tagamet
So I'm going to try the Tagamet way before surgery. Ann, was it one week before and one week after? I figure it can't hurt! And if it's a big help, so much the better!

Yes, that's how I did it...
I took it in 400 mg doses, 2x per day. You just have to make sure that you get your surgeon to write an order for it so you can get it post-op in the hospital. I don't know exactly about the dosage...I think Tanstaffl's wife was taking at twice what I was taking. Either way, I think it's def a can't hurt, might help thing to do. Good luck! AA

is mo' better?
The published short term treatment results were for curative surgery with stage III. Ann got a curative surgery, we weren't quite that fortunate, and we didn't know about the leftovers for a while. So I am glad that we've used more cimetidine for a longer period in stage IV.
Based on various stage IV adenocarcinoma papers, I really do think that cimetidine is more than just a lucky charm in mCRC - it +- doubled life spans for several adenocarcinomas. Although the dosage dependence is slight, there is lab data that shows higher dose yielded better results, so we have stuck with Life Extension's max of 1600 mg per day since she tolerates it well. The surgeon actually raised the dose for the last surgery since he was depending on cimetidine alone to prevent acid aspiration.
Marie, good luck with your surgery.

Tans, I'm just a horrible pill taker, I'm supposed to be on four pills a day right now, and I don't take any of them, so I know I won't stay on Tagamet, but I'm sure I can handle it for a couple of weeks if hubby reminds me, (it's really my forgetfulness that is at play here, it really is bad). Thanks for well wishes on surgery .
thanks for letting me know about prescription Ann, I sure do appreciate it!

With things like that I keep extra supplies in various locations, kitchen table, bath, desk drawer, etc. so self reminding and instant availablity. Once or twice a day whenever, doesn't have to be on a perfect schedule, although before bedtime is probably best for the first 400-800 mg.
