Still in hospital

in Colorectal Cancer #1

Had to go to the ER on Saturday morning because I couldn't pee and I was in so much pain. My blatter was hard as a rock and I could hardly walk. I was also so tired it took all my energy to just get out of bed. Anyway my wife said wewere going to ER and I knew that was the right move even though I dread it. This time the ER wasn't too bad. They moved fast because they were worried my blatter would rupture. I knew thewe were going to catherized me and my goodness when they did I screamed like a baby. They got 1800cc of urine right away. Then almost another 800. It felt so good after all that pee came out. Anyway I got admitted and my hemo was 5 so they gave me 2 units of blood then checked hemo and still low so got another 2 units. I was wiped out but knew I would be better. Still here and looks like I will have a permanent bag.  Any advise on the bag?  Pray everyone is doing the best as possible. Jeff

    Gosh, Jeff!

    Where did this come from? I'm so sorry that you're climbing over another dammm boulder in the road. I don't have a problem going, just feel like it all the time. Boy, it's he!! to get old. Isn't there a bladder surgery that can be done? Hubby had one recently to reopen his blocked bladder.

    Please keep us updated.

    Keep fighting the good fight!

    We are sending our thoughts and prayers!   I had a blockage in the urinary tract.  They gave me muscle relaxants and I peed like a race horse also.   They kept me in the hospital for 8 days doing various tests only to tell me they could not find anything wrong with me. The problem went away.

    My dad had a blockage not too

    My dad had a blockage not too long ago,  he was in hospital with a viral pneumonia .....he's had prostate issues for years ..... anyway,  he came home with the cath. in place  had it for about a month, nursing care came to help him ..... one day they were going to change it and he wanted to try and see if he was okay with it out...and he was .... hasn't needed it since and he's going fine on his own again.      You didn't say what was causing your blockage.   Hopefully your issue can be resolved too, hate it that you are going through more issues.

    Hope you get out of there soon, Jeff.

    I wonder if self-catheterization might be an option?  My mom had a similar problem after a stroke, and they said that a lot of people are able to use the catheter at home.  I assume this would mean no bag.  Don't know if this is a possibility for you, but I hope that whatever route they take, you get to head home asap.  Hugs~AA

    Still in hospital

    Looks like I'll be here the rest of the week. Yesterdayeas a little rough, I was really bloated and swollen. It finally got better. Today I had blood in stool so onc wants to keep monitoring things. On the good side my hemo was 12 which is great for me. A nnew problem is developing...my poor dingy and scrotum are real swollen and retaking fluids. Strange stuff have towells under them to get them elevated. What's next? This crazy cancer. Pray everyone is doing as good as possible. Jeff

    You've sure had quite a time. And like Doc, you are a trouper through it all. I hope you won't have to have an indwelling catheter permanently, but if you do, I hope they set you up with a leg bag for daytime use - you can get extension tubing and strap it to your lower leg. If you don't let it get too full, it shouldn't really show under clothes. Then you could switch to the big bedside bag for daytime. Maybe you will be able to do a straight cath like somebody else mentioned. It really isn't that bad, or so they say. I hope these problems resolve for you.

    What indignities we suffer.

    Actually, after all some of us go through, they no longer become indignities. 

    I pray that you recieve the right treatment, and will soon be out of the hospital. I swear, you own bed is a huge deal when it comes to recovery.

    Keep that chin up. We're here for you.

    Not so sure, Sandy

    Jeff said at the beginning that it hurt like the dickens....don't know if it hurts more or less for either sex....I was always unconscious when they rigged me.  I know of one guy who had an indwelling catheter but I couldn't reach him to find out how he was doing with it.

    But, I think one time I'd like to hear you just yell it out:)

    It does a body good sometimes...you've taken a real pounding and we all want you to get to a place where you're not under such duress.

    But I was thinking that the pain might have been because his bladder was so distended with urine and probably a lot of spasms going on. Usually (in my experience) men don't really complain of pain with insertion of a catheter. I suppose if they have an enlarged prostate or other complicating factors, it could be painful, but that's not happened to me in my nursing experience. But I've never forced a catheter in - I'm sure some nurses do. Ouch!!! But... I'm not a man, and I've never had a catheter. So I can't really speak from any personal experience. I know I don't want one if I can help it!

    A bladder full on urine,

    is tremedously painful, from what I saw with my mom.  Kind of shocking how bad it got.

    I'm sorry you have to go through this.I had a cathater put in for a test,with no pain killers.I can agree that the pain is unreal,I screamed the whole time.I hope you get better.I was taking flowmax,so I could go but now I can't stop,so I quit taking it.I will pray for you,good luck.
