Help with dentures

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Hello everyone. my mother just finished her chemo and radiation for throat cancer.  She had to have the rest of her teeth removed before they would start the treatments.  Now she needs help paying for the dentures.  She has medicare but they do not pay for anything.  Does anyone know of places that might help her out?

    First....I'd do a little battle with

    Medicare since her tooth loss is due to her throat cancer.  There is a provision in Medicare about regarding losing teeth due to other medical problems.

    Read this part.... 

    Medicare does cover these types of dental services:

    "Dental services that are an integral part of a covered procedure (e.g., reconstruction of the jaw following accidental injury).

    Extractions done in preparation for radiation treatment for neoplastic diseases involving the jaw. "

    Also thinking that if she's had her teeth pulled for a while, by going to a dentist for them rather than a denturist, she might be able to get them for a better price...in the $1400 range rather than the $2400 range.  First, tho....prepare to battle with medicare.

    False Teeth

    I would try what Phannie51 said first . The only other thing I can think of is if there is a dental school near by or Medicaid might pay for them.

    What Phrannie said...
    This should be a covered service under her medical portion of insurance coverage. Don't take no for an answer, appeal every NO you may get.
    If in the end you find they just won't cover it, then seek out a school of dentistry. I worked in dentistry for quite a few years and when I did my internship at USC I saw them take low and no fee patients, based on need. Otherwise they have set fees which are very low compared to private practices. If you don't have a school of dentistry near you, call as many prosthodontics offices and tell them your story and ask what they suggest. You may get lucky there too.
