Post op nerve pain
Hi,
I am 5 months post op lower right lobectomy. Chemo out of the way,but my nerve pain, which had seem to be subsiding or at least manageable with 800 ibuprophen and Voltaren gel(finally off dilaudid)...has now come back with a vengeance after physical therapy for balance and strenghening on Monday. The PT required me to lift 5 lb weights and stretch with bands over my head. Wasn't painful as I was doing it, but OMG I am ready to take a dilaudid now.
Does anyone know how long before this type of PT or exercise should be done to avoid re-occurance of the pain? I just returned to work 4 weeks ago and cannot afford to be out again.
Thankyou for your input.
(the PT was ordered when I developed significant neuropathy in my feet..for balance and strength of my lower body..

Hi Dana
I have had similar PT and most definitely have been dealing with neuropathy and nerve pain. Please talk to your doctor about a prescription for gabapentin (neurontin) or pregabalin (Lyrica). I use the gabapentin, it has helped tremendously. Dilaudid is good for pain but these two work specifically on nerve pain. The gabapentin has helped reduce the neuropathy and the tinnitus as well. Hope this helps.

Hi Dennycee,
Thank you for responding. I have been on Neurontin for the nerve pain since January. The neuropathy didin't develop until March. I have had several nerve blocks in the pain clinic, but so far it keeps persisting. I have no pain with neuropathy(thank God) so I can live with it. But the pain just keeps coming. I don't want to take Dilaudid anymore, so unless I am in tears,I did a lot of research and decided not to take lyrica. I had one session in physical therapy and was back to full pain in 2 days.
I am so lucky in so many ways, but the pain just won't quit

I had a lobectemy ( right upper lobe) in September, 2012.This gave me the worst pain I have ever endured. I was given Oxycodone, every 4 to 6 hours. I have been sleeping on a louge chair since then.I am ok, unless I try t oexert myself, then the pain. I was told the pain would be ith me for a year or more. It is 8 months now and I still hve the pain.

Hello Dana !
I didn't have the lobectomy. I had a a wedge to remove a portion of the lower right lobe. But yes nerve pain does factor in to the equation. I do use flexeril.....which will help slightly. I also use advil...as it is helping with the inflamation. I am out post 3 months. I have been more active around the house, and I was knocked to my knees with sharp shooting pain after vacuming and mopping floors. (in the area of re-sect) Darn it, this is frustrating....they clear us for activity but don't explain what may or may not happen down the road. Please explain things to your PT, and let them figure out the best way to proceed. Hoping things improve and you don't have to miss much work if any ! Katie

Have you tried Flexaril yet? Many of these pain meds work better if taken daily. Eventually you do get over feeling sleepy on them.
Editing to mention that I had nerve damage as a result of back surgery. The gabapentin made huge difference there. Sorry it didn't work for you.
