Antidepressants and Tamoxifen

I know this has been posted before and from what I remember, it seems some had not been told that certain antidepressants should not be taken with tamoxifen.  Just thought I would repost that info for you again.

Antidepressant Drug Interaction with Tamoxifen Safety Range

Paxil (paroxetine)

Prozac (fluoxetine)

 Prevents antiestrogen benefit Avoid Use

Cymbalta (duloxetine)

Wellbutrin (bupropion)

Zoloft (sertraline)

 Medium interefence with antiestrogen benefit

Note: Studies confirm that Zoloft inteferes with Tamoxifen.

 Increases Risk
Saint John's Wort
(hypericum)		 Modest inhibition of antiestrogen benefit Increased Risk

Celexa (citalopram)

Lexapro (escitalopram)

Pristiq (desvenlafaxine)

Remeron (mirtazapine)

 Mild interaction

Note: Pristiq and Remeron have not been well-studied for interaction with Tamoxifen.

 Slight Risk
Black Cohosh
(actaea)		 May enhance the antiestrogen benefit

Note: There are just a few studies for interaction with Tamoxifen.

 Slight Risk

Effexor (venlafaxine)

 Almost no interaction with Tamoxifen Best Choice

    Yup

    Agree with all of this.  Came off Cymbalta to Effexor more for flashes than anything.  Would still keep away from black cohosh though for Estregen Positive ladies.

    Hi Lori!  I don't have knowledge of antidepressants interferring with someone taking Arimidex, but, I am not a doctor and don't know for sure. 

    I did google if Doxepin and Arimidex could be taken together and what I found was this:

    Who should not take SINEQUAN (Doxepin)?

    You should not take SINEQUAN (Doxepin), if you have problems such as trachoma, muscular pain, urinating problems, suicidal thoughts, metabolic disorders such as diabetes, pituitary gland anomalies, bleeding and clotting disorders; aggression related maniac depression, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnoea and postural hypotension. If you are taking medicines such as cimetidine, any MAO inhibitors, thiazide like diuretics, anti-emetics such as prochlorperazine, promethazine, tolazamide, warfarin, quinidine and tranylcypromine. These drugs may cause serious and life-threatening events that may be fatal in most of the cases. Avoid taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin), 14 days before and after taking MAO inhibitor drugs to prevent any complications by drug interactions. According to Food and Drug Administration, SINEQUAN (Doxepin) is classified as a Pregnancy category – C drug and it can harm the foetus. You should avoid taking SINEQUAN (Doxepin), if you are pregnant or a nursing mother. If you are allergic to SINEQUAN (Doxepin), you should inform your Physician.

    It didn't mention not taking it with breast cancer hormone therapy.

    Thank You For Posting!

    Great timing!  I was JUST talking to my doctor yesterday about the hot flashes and all the lack of sleep I've been having (not the greatest thing to have since going back to work last week).  She recommended the bottom one for me and I'm happy to see it on the list as something that is okay to use with Tamoxifen.  I really don't WANT to take anything else, but I know I need to get this stuff under control. I'm hoping it works for me and that I won't have side effects from that, too.

    Thank you for posting this for us.  I'd hope that every doctor would know this and not put survivors that are on tamoxifen on some of these antidepressants.
