My beau of 22 years is not doing well.

He was dx'ed in 1980 with heart problems that, over the years, have come and gone...always knew a day was coming when there would be a big event....

While we were on the cruise the end of February, he slowed down, barely making the tour of Jerusalem.  He was short of breath, and his abdomen was distended.  He was always cold, and skin itched.  Those of you with liver problems are already nodding, I know...and many of the meds to keep his heart going cause liver damage...

Last Friday he was in the hospital to have fluid removed from his abdomen....they took almost a gallon!  He felt immediately better, shedding 20 pounds in 2 days, and was breathing much better (the fluid was pressing on his lungs).  We thought it was a one-time thing, but when we saw the cardiologist, he said it was the beginning of something new...and that we needed to do more to find what was going on....

We are both nervous (read frightened) about what this new development is, and truely as of last night (4 days after the 'tapping'), he feels the fluid building again...

If you could spare a prayer, we are hoping that there is a simple answer...he has been thru 5 procedures and 3 surgeries (one to implant a pacemaker) since I was dx'ed with my cancers.  We are worried that this is cancer...

Hugs, in advance!!!

Kathi

Thank you! They did....but we don't have results...

His liver function is challenged anyway...and, as with many times with me, results are slow in coming....

    Kathi,
    I will keep you both

    Kathi,

I will keep you both in my prayers.  Waiting, as you well know, is the worst and I think it is worse when I have to wait for something that has to do with my hubby than with me.  Please keep us in the loop and know that all of us are hoping and praying for the best.

    Thank you, dearheart!

We always make the joke that we are the perfect couple to ask to a party....with 1 out of 3 will have heart troubles, and 1 out of 4, cancer, we bring favorable odds to everyone else!!

Thank you, dear Linda, for the thoughts and prayers!

It's not statistically likely that it is cancer, so we are hoping (? wierd) that it's 'only' heart trouble....

Wierd world we all live in, isn't it?...

    Beau

    Kathi,

As someone who had a herniated liver that ended up in my chest and the fact I take methotrexate I know about liver problems.  I also know that the liver is one of the most resiliant organs there is. Mine was able to be fixed through surgery.  If his isn't functioning rightor deterioratiing maybe he could get a transplant.  Just a piece of another liver will grow into a new one.  Just throwing things out there.  Liquid in the abdomen pressing on the lungs is another challenge.  I found the following information on the Livestrong website.  I would say check it out.  Don't think the worst until you know what you are dealing with.  Think positive.  The article gives good news.

A common complaint in patients with liver problems is a sensation of fullness or bloating within the abdomen. This sensation results from increased water retention within the membranous lining of the abdominal tissue known as ascites, according to "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine." Ascites increases the intra-abdominal pressure and distends the abdomen. A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings describes ascites as an accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity due to portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is a result of liver diseases, most commonly cirrhosis.

    Significance

According to "Clinical Hepatology: Principles and Practice of Hepatobiliary Diseases" by Dr. Henryk Dancygier, approximately 25 percent of cirrhosis patients develop ascites within 10 years. Prognostically, the development of ascites is important to predicting the patient's survival and healing outcome. Ascites is associated with an 80 percent mortality rate. Death has been shown to occur less than five years after the first appearance of the peritoneal fluid accumulation.
