Hi all,

Can anyone recommend me some nutrition supplements for kidney cancer patients? I am flying back to my country and would like to buy some for my father before I leave. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!

Currently I've bought the following:

Ensure Nutrition Drink Powder, Vanilla Flavor, 14 oz Can (397 g)

Amazing Grass Organic Wheat Grass Powder, 60 Servings, 17-Ounce Container

GNC Preventive Nutrition Liver Health Formula

Are these good? Are there any other supplements doctors recommend to take?

    Diet & Supplements

I have done quite a bit of extensive research in the area of proper nutrition, diet, and certain supplements.  In fact I have prepared a 65+ page .pdf document all about it.

If you email me at: n.feldman@videopost.com I will be happy to send you a copy.

However, I do not suggest using Ensure (at least not as a first choice).  It contains 18 grams of sugar with no fiber.  Instead, try using pure Whey protein for adding calories. Whey also has been shown to have tumor-fighting properties (in vitro).

Also, I have not investigated either Wheat Grass or the GNC formula so I can't offer any opinions on them.

    Supplements and diet advice

    Hello Neil,

I have just gone through a partial nephrectomy, this is the 2nd time I have had kidney cancer. I note that you mentioned a document you have prepared with information to help ensure you stay healthy.

I wondered if I may purchase a copy from you as I am not sure what to do for the best.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Immunocal

Any opinions, or have you tried this product? When I found out about my diagnosis (pre-operative) (03/29/2013), a friend purchased this for me, and it hasn't arrived yet.

    Diet & Supplements

    Hi Djinnie,

My document is absolutely free and available to anyone who asks.  Just email me at: n.feldman@videopost.com so I can email it back to you (it is over 65 pages long as a .pdf file).

It outlines the science and rationale behind what I call a "proper" diet and "appropriate" supplements for cancer sufferers (with special emphasis on metastatic renal cancer patients like myself).

Even if you do not plan to follow what I am doing I believe you find lots of valuable information regarding the role of nutrition in helping to deal with this disease.

    Best wishes,

    Immunocal - Whey Protein

Yes, this is a special formulation of whey protein which certainly does have anti-tumor properties. The manufacturer claims it boosts glutathione, which, if true, is a great idea:

Milk is made up of about 80% of the protein casein. The other 20% is made up of the protein whey. It is highly recommended for weight gain by the folks at the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment. Here is what they have to say about it:

"Whey helps raise glutathione[1] levels and inhibit cancer. Thus, high-quality, micro-filtered whey protein is a good protein supplement for people needing more protein … It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed by the body. In its purest form, as whey protein isolate, it contains little to no fat, lactose, or cholesterol. Whey has been found to provide immune support while raising glutathione levels. Cancer patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy often have difficulty in meeting their daily nutritional requirements due to nausea and lack of appetite. This may lead to weight loss, muscle loss, and protein deficiency. Whey protein is an excellent protein choice for cancer patients as it is very easy to digest and very gentle to the system. Cancer patients also may have reduced glutathione levels (like many athletes) and a weakened immune system. Numerous studies have shown that whey protein, rich in the amino acid cysteine, provides an extra boost to the immune system by raising glutathione levels. This may help reduce the risk of infection and is believed to possibly improve the responsiveness of the immune system."

[1] Glutathione is very important in the generation of GABA (gamma amino butyric acid). It is manufactured inside the cell from its precursor amino acids: glycine, glutamate, and cysteine. Cysteine contains sulfur, another important cell nutrient. GABA is one of the most important inhibitory neurotransmitters. Some believe it is an important factor in mood disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety.
