Kemo Brain

in Lung Cancer #1

Its been awhile since I poste but things have gotten much worse. The kemo seemed to be working for awhile but then my mother seemed to be getting really confused and out of it. The doc said she had a UT infection and her blood was low she had a transfusion and started antibiotics. The very next day while I was cleaning her up she started having trouble breathing. I called the ambulance and her breathing was at 60. The hospital found she had pnemonia. She was in ICU for 3 days and a MRI has shown brain damage from the Chemo. She was in the hospital for another week and is now in a rehab it'll be at least 2 weeks before she can come home even with me to take care of her. I really don't know what to do if she should continue Chemo if her brain can heal or if we should just try to enjoy the time we have left with her. Has anyone else had to deal with a family member of loved one whos had brain damage from Chemo? Did you continue treatment? I'm so confused and scared and feel so alone please help.

    More than chemo brain.

    This is so much more than the slowing down and dulling of the thought process that most of us experience as chemo brain.  This is the first time I have heard of anything like it and would like to learn more with you.  Our doctors keep telling us that chemo agents do not cross the blood brain barrier.  Maybe Dr West at cancergrace.org can help you answer this question.  I know sleeplessinjersey found them helpful.

    CHEMO BRAIN

    Oh yes. my husband ha Chemo Brain; he was forgetful, mad sometimes he would look at me and did not know who I was, I was the only caregiver. I don`t  know why I am still here, after a year he was gone,  it was like hell, I am sorry to say this things but my husband suffer for two year because the treatments, because de doctors they have to keep working and making money for the cancer centers the side effects does not buy time, it prolonges you torture and then you are gone and your family is left thinking; why,why.

    Rosi- your husband had brain mets too.

    The radiation is much harder than the chemo when someone has Whole Brain Radiation.  Your husband had the worst possible response, just like my mom.  I am so sorry for your loss.  I know you miss him every day.  As bad as he was, he would most likely have been in much much worse pain.  

    The chemo brain is different.  It's not quite as bad.
