How common a name is Flood over there? Is it commonest in the S.W. ?

I sometimes have a sense of foregathering doom - all of a sudden everyone from my past whom I've been out of touch with for anything from 30 to 50 years is contacting me - like relatives foregathering round a deathbed.  The last few days I've been in close touch with my best friend from undergrad days, 50 years ago, and chums from Edinburgh Uni weight-lifting club 30 years ago (all due to wives who tracked me down via the Web, through my Wife's unusual name). 

Then, a couple of days ago, a lady emailed me out of the blue and we instantly established that we are related.  She'd been doing some genealogy research and established that upline from her is my great grandfather, born in Devon, England in 1805.  Turns out that her own grandfather was my uncle and we'll stay in touch and exchange genealogical leads.

Unfortunately that's my Welsh side, not my Irish, so it won't throw any light on whether you and I are related - but it's a small world, isn't it!

Is  that question for me?  I have known a couple Floods. Not as common as Smith or Rodriquez but more common than Wedgie.

Well you 2 lads are definitely charmers alright!!  Fox a lot of people that emigrated on the coffin ships during the famine dropped the "O" from their names so they could get on the ships faster...they were done alpahbetically so if your ancestory left Ireland then you would have been O'Driscoll!!  And yes Tex it is a small world and getting smaller!!

GARY!!!!  You bold boy!!  Texas I am a very good, god fearing Irish girl!!!!  ;-)  The Obamas relatives came from a place in Co. Offaly called Moneygall.  When he visited Ireland a couple of years ago he even had a pint of the black stuff in his cousins bar!!!

On my mother's side were Ooleys and Pattersons. I believe Ooley is an Irish name (?) and my great grandfather's family originated in the UK.

My father's side immigrated from Germany. Their name was Groce (a variant of Gross).

But both sides came to the US a long, long time ago. I'd say over 200 years ago. It's an interesting topic.
