Maximum time between finishing chemo and having surgery

in Breast Cancer #1

My wife was diagnosed with stage 2 grade 3 IDC and completed 4 round of A/C followed by 4 rounds of Taxol. Her tumors shrunk by over 50% and the one lymph node which showed up as affected on the ultrsound has returned to normal size. She was scheduled to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction at her 6 week mark after her last  chemo treatment. Her surgery would have been this past friday(3-15-13) . On 3-12, she was called by her plastic surgon and said she would be unavailable for her surgery date and would not be available until 3-29-13, which puts her at 8 weeks post chemo. Of course she and I are both hystericalabout this, her surgical oncologist said this would be OK and she has no concers about pushing the surgery to 8 weeks post chemo. Any thoughts or advice on this would greatly help. She is going to the Univ of VA cancer center and we trust her surg Onc  but this just seems like a long time to wait after chemo. Thanks all.

    being worried usually does not help

    I am sure both of you are in shock to reschedule the surgery. It is not easy as you have been thinking and preparing for it.please use these two weeks for recovery and boosing her immune system she will tolerate surgery well. My mastectomy was before Chemo as a first step of treatment, so I cannot comment about time.

    I  had surgery 2 weeks post neo-adjuvant (4 DD A/C) and then 3 weeks post surgery started 12 weekly Taxol. But then I'm IBC so that does make a difference.

    I have three more taxol tx to go. My surgery will be 6 weeks post treatment. My surgeon told me it would be ok to wait for up to 6 months. Stage 2 IDC. I understand your worries I wanted my surgery the next day! Turns out for optimal healing waiting is a little better.

My wife did pretty well with the exception of some bone pain , but taking claritin and motrin helped her alot. Good luck and god bless you . My thoughs and prayers will be with you.

    Taxol treatment
    So far ok, small complaints, mostly neuropathy, dose decreased by ten percent and much better, insomnia from steroids. I'm able to work full time through this. My thoughts and prayers will also be with you and your wife!

    Hi Jeepster,

    I hope you are doing well. My wife had mild neuropathy during and after her taxol which she took 4 dense doses vice the 12 lower doses. It has almost gone away now after 7 weeks since her last treatment. She also worked full time during her entire chemo regiment. She would get her treaatment on Friday and then go back to work on Monday, I think she maybe missed 2-3 days of work total. She was a trooper during it all. She also had the insomnia due to the steroids, her Onc ended up prescribing Lunesta to help her sleep which did help. God bless you and good luck with your remaining treatments, remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel and before long the chemo beast will be gone.

    I may not get all my chemo because my numbers are up and some do

    i have neg three idc and I am supposed to get seven more treatments but my liver enzymes are high when I get treatment and my neuphillas  are low so they have decided that we will get a MRI on Friday to see if the tumor is gone if so no more treatment I will have surgery. If it is still there I will go every two weeks instead of every week for treatment. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Thank you all
