The final stretch of first chemo treatment......

Jason is almost finished with his first chemo treatment & all is well.....VERY well as a matter of fact. I'm in tears as I'm typing this, I am so relieved. He has had no nausea, no vomiting, NO sensitivity to cold things (he is sipping on iced tea now) & has been eating more than he has in a few weeks. We are still in the hospital, he has a few hours left of the 5-FU, so when that finishes we can either go home tonight or wait until morning, the dr. said he would just leave that up to Jason. I know that he will probably have side effects, maybe bad ones, but as for right now he is comfortable & that's what matters now. He said he is just gonna deal with it as it comes, the good & the bad. I am just so relieved that he isn't sick or hurting....please pray it stays that way! ((((HUGS)))) Kris

Great news Kris! There is a feeling of relief when things get started. My husband had a little difficulty after the first treatment...but then started to feel better once the tumor started to shrink. He's done very well on folfox. They just dropped the oxi after the 12 treatment because the neuropathy got too much. I hope Jason continues to feel better and that you both get some rest tonight!

As usual, I agree with Jen.
As usual, I agree with Jen. It is a relief to get things underway. The fear of the unknown is stressful. I think Jason will do well. I hope he decides to come home tonight. He will feel even better once he gets back to the familiarity of home life. Hope it all continues to go well.

I also had to stop oxy after

I also had to stop oxy after 12 tx due to neuropathy even though it was still working on the tumors. My neuropathy is in my feet and even up my legs a bit and just my fingertips (numbness and tingling).

    Happy thought indeed!

    This is good news.

I am so glad that he is feeling better, and once home, and sleeping in his own bed, wow, he will be so happy.

You're still in our prayers though. Enjoy!

    :-)

Glad to hear that but please understand, most of the discomforts start a few treatments in.  My worst week was after my 7th or 8th treatment.  My potassium dropped and I could barely walk.  I never threw up but had constipation for 6 months.  After disconnect from the pump is when I'd crash.  The neuropathy and cold sensitivity began after a few tx's....... and the neuropathy continues today, almost 4 years after the end of chemo.

Glad he did well this time.  Why are they doing chemo in the hospital?  I think 98% of us went to the doctor's office for infusion and wore the pump home for 2 days, then went back for disconnect.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. Patch-Jason is in the hospital because he was having a lot of pain last weekend. He was suppose to start the treatments in the dr's office last Monday, but we ended up in the ER instead. So, after they ruled out a blockage he started his first treatment Wednesday & it ended last night. He was suppose to be going home today but his WBC was up & his blood pressure was a little low, so the hospital dr. wants him to stay another day so they can rule out any infection & they are gonna do a chest x-ray. The oncologist that is covering the hospital this weekend just came in to see him & he said the WBC thing is pretty much to be expected. He said that his blood work might be out of whack (my terminology, not his lol) because of the chemo. Jason is feeling well today, so hopefully we'll be going home tomorrow. Please continue to keep him in your prayers! ((((HUGS)))) Kris

    How are things going today?

Did you get Jason home?  I hope so...hospitals aren't the best places for healing, even though sometimes you absolutely must be there!  Hugs to you both~AA

    Sounds like he isidling

Sounds like he isidling better now.  I had a rough recovery after my first treatment, then treatments 2 throughabout 6 were fairly easy...just really, really tired after disconnect for a couple of days.  Treatment 7... The neuropathy really kicked in.   The cut the Oxalyplatin by 25% again other 25% by treatment 10 or 11.   I have almost constant neuropathy that has gotten worse since i finished my chemo in January.  I was taking gabapentin for the neuropathy but we had to stop it...it caused my liver panels to double .   My liver levels are back down now...I am just having to deal with the neuropathy.   I saw another dr in the practice who prescribed Lyrica but the insurance co will only fill it through the mail...it will cost $175...I called the drs offc to see if there was something else I could take and was told that the Lyrica is basically the same thing as the gabapentin...so for now we are going to see if I can manage the neuropathy without it.  Please let the drs know if he starts to feel the effects of the neuropathy... I have it in my tongue, feet and hands...it really limits what I can do right now...my hobby is needlework .. Right now I can't even think about picking up a needle ... And I have had some issues with balance.

    Jason is home....

Jason got to go home yesterday, he is doing fairly well, just extremely tired. And he has started having diarrhea today, after being so constipated the past week....He is still able to drink cold drinks & even ate popcicles today, so I hope that continues. He has a doctors appt. Wednesday, just as a follow-up after the hospital stay. I will keep you all posted. Take care & God Bless, Kris

  • Hi Kris,
    Good to hear

    Hi Kris,

Good to hear treatment has started for your husband and that he's doing well at this juncture.  Hopefully, minimal to no side effects will be the norm throughout his cycle of chemo.  At least, you'll be in your home together soon, which is a good thing for both of you.  Remember, we're here for you both.
