I am looking for patients or survivors with lung cancer who have never been a smoker.

    I have a friend who was just diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. It is a non-smokers cancer. It is called bronchoalveolar carcinoma of the lungs. It has spread to his bones around his lungs, but not to the brain or lymph nodes. He will start chemotherapy next week. He is also going to travel to Vanderbilt University where they have clinical trials for this exact type of cancer going on. They are the only place other than the Univ. of Wisconsin researching this exact type of cancer. Can you share anything you have learned or your experience. We have learned so much in 1 week. We have been devoting our time fully to research, phone calls, etc. to help him. We would appreciate any info. Thanks.

    going to MD Anderson next week to start a 4 month protocal. What are you doing?

    Hi,Linda Iwas diagnosed with nonsmall lung cancer just six months ago and I never smoked in my life,after my chemos yea I'm fatigued but I'll fight this to the end.My job was chemical Flooring which I believe was the cause of my Cancer in the lung.later Pancho

    You won't find very many probably. I was a smoker but the surgeon told me that ciggarettes did not cause mine. Iwas also a Hair dresser and he said mine was caused from the environment. I had adenocarcenoma in my left lung (they removed 1/2) and I had large cell carcinoma in my right lung 3 1/2 yrs later and they removed 1/4. I have been clean since 1991. I didn't have to have any treatment except the surgerys.

    Welcome to all the new people!

    20% of Lung Cancer cases are individuals who never smoked.  Most test positive for EGFR Mutations and can take Tarceva as a maintenance drug.  While Tarceva is not a chemo, almost everyone who has it experiences shrinkage.  For those who qualify, Tarceva is given until there is evidence of progression.  Then they begin chemo.  New treatments seem to come out regularly. 

    If you were a nonsmoker and genetic testing was not done insist on it.  LC is being diagnosed in teens and twenty somethings who never smoked.  Because non smokers are not perceived as being at risk, most are never diagnosed until they are stage 4.  Usually those caught earlier are caught by accident.  Doctors don't even bother to look for it because they perceive it to be a smokers disease.

    I have a 8 mm nodule on my left lung that’s been there for 15 years. What are the chances it’s cancer?

    Absolutely get a biopsy as soon as possible. My 1 cm lung nodule was discovered on a CT scan accidentally, but the doctor's didn't think it was lung cancer because I never smoked and there was no history of cancer in my family. They said I could wait six months and do another scan to see if it changed size, but since on a PET scan there were two suspicious looking lymph nodes right near the nodule, they said they could do a biopsy on a lymph node if I wanted to be aggressive. Long story short, it turned out to be stage III adenocarcinoma.
