NED Has Changed to NEAD

I read this on Inspire a little while ago:  

I have been confused about NED and its meaning. Nothing lit up on my last Pet scan - but my liver tumor, which has shrunk by 60%, was still noted on the radiology report. So when I attend a Stage IV News seminar this week I asked on of the presenting oncologists to clarify the meaning of NED. She says that NED is an older term and is being replaced by NEAD - no evidence of active disease. So, my tumors were inert and did not light up, but they are still there - therefore NEAD. 

 

 Thought that was interesting but I don't think the same image of dance with NEAD to be the same as dancing with NED.

    PS:

    I didn't even think they used it.  Once my primary care doctor inquired what I meant by saying I was NED.  I asked an oncologist nurse once and she said they never use that term but knew what it meant.

    That makes sense

    My last PET back in October showed no evidence of disease, but that doesn't mean I'm not still Stage 4--you can't go back.  As far as I'm concerned, Doris--let's just dance our little booties off!  Take good care.

    Oh, CC -- groan...:-)

    I also think different doctors just prefer different terms.  My radiologist uses, "No Evidence of Recurrent Tumor," or NERT.  And "dancing with NERT" just doesn't sound sexy at all -- I picture myself doing the hokey-pokey with some guy in nerdy glasses and a pocket protector....

    Thank you ladies.  I did like to dance at one time.  With a brace it is kind of hard but Renee, I can still shake my booty as that old song stated.  I was never a great dancer CC but I saw it as a good form of exercise.  Hokey Pokey, been a while since I've done that dance.  It was always fun to do with a bunch of little kids.  

    Think NED will remain and the medical profession will call it as they see it.

     

    Renee, glad to see your post.  How are the plans for Paris coming along?  Wish I could go too!

    NED, NEAD, NERT--I love 'em all!

    We'll take any or all of them.  Doris, the plans for Paris are progressing nicely.  We're going in June, have already gotten airline tickets (holy cow$$$$) and secured an apartment in the Latin Quarter near the Sorbonne for 15 days.  It is a block and a half from the Seine and the location looks perfect.  We have about 5 guidebooks, city maps, and maps of the metro line, etc.  We've been pouring through them, putting stickies everywhere of the places we want to see.  I'm trying to brush up on my high school and college French.  My sister (who has been to Paris several times) says they'll just laugh at me, but I don't care.  I'm going to try my French whenever I can!  Anyway, having a blast planning and talking about it.

    City of Lights - Latin Quarter

    Hi Renee,

    I stayed in the Latin Quarter near the Sorbonne and near Notre Dame.  I loved the area and it was in 2003 very safe (even at 2:30 AM).  

    The French will be pleased that you are trying to speak in their language and won't laugh at you.  I spoke French (first language, actually) so I felt that I've come home, so to speak.

    Posted on my Expression Page a photo of me at Giverny in 2003.  One of my late friends on my original breast cancer support forum demanded I have a photo taken.  I am usually camera shy and explain why with my photo.  My hair now is salt & pepper and a few pounds heavier (lack of exercise - can't walk with brace).  Otherwise, c'est moi!   I also posted the History of the Pink Bus should anyone want to re read it.  Giverny was the home of Claude Monet and I spent a delightful afternoon there.  Oh, it was as lovely as one can imagine.  Like stepping into a painting.  

    Glad that you are proceeding with plans to the City of Lights.  A great city and so much to see and do.  One can not become tired of Paris.
