BI RADS category 3

I had this on my last mammogram.  It said the Assessment : Probably Benign bi-rads 3

I got scared too, but, my onco ordered an ultrasound and a MRI to make sure that it was NOT bc again, and, it wasn't.  I do still have to go every 6 months though for all of the tests, instead of yearly like some, but, that is alright.  And, by having all 3 done, I feel so relieved. 

So, don't get too upset if your mammo says that.  Just be sure and get an ultrasound and a MRI so if it is bc, it is caught early.  And if it isn't..you can celebrate!

I got the bi -rads 3 mammo report on the same breast that I was originally diagnosed in too.  My report also stated that my breast tissue was heterogeneously dense in that breast.  It said it may lower the sensitivity of mamography.  There were new calicifications.  It stated that it probably represented dystrophic calcifications and a 6 month follow up was recommended. Like I wrote above, my onco then had me get an ultrasound and a MRI for certainty.

Dystrophic calcification is a name given to a certain kind of breast calcification that is commonly found on a mammogram. It is considered a benign finding. However, the most common situation in which one finds dystrophic calcification's is following breast cancer radiation treatments. These are calcification's which would show up on a followup investigation, and are generally a welcome sign. They are also quite common following breast trauma, including surgery.

p.s. Also wanted to say that you can get your mammo report from the records department where you had the mammo done.  I got mine there first, the day after my mammo, before I even met with my onco, so, I would know what was going on.  It is free and you just have to fill out, usually, one sheet requesting it.  I have all of my reports from all of my tests, office visits and surgeries.  My onco had it too and gave me an extra one.

I will ask about ultrsound at the very least.  My surgeon is tops in this area and I am sure she will give me the scoop. I am feeling a little better knowing that it could be radiation related.  

The only reason I know about this BIRAD 3 is because I did pick up my report today.  When I had the mammo, the technician called back into the exam room when I thought I was done.  I was nervous but she said she needed some more pics for the doctor.  Something to do with the an area that was close to the ribs.  ???   I guess the doc didn't want to say anything or couldn't say anything.  I will totally just breath and wait to hear what my surgeon's take is on this.

The report says something about density.  I am not reading it at the moment, I put it away.

My report said my breast was dense too, so, try to not worry, even though I know you are.  And, from the info I posted above too, rads can cause this.

I hate that you're so upset.  Have a drink of wine and a good dinner and watch a funny movie!

I do know they rate them with numbers, but, I haven't had the number 3 yet.  Leeza has given you some really good advice, and, since she had this happen and everything turned out ok, I hope it makes you feel better.

it's hard NOT to worry when one thinks everything will be a breeze from here on in.  One = Me ... I just want to forget about BC .. Of course, having appointments and taking meds daily makes it hard to forget.  For the most part, I don't fret over stuff like this.  But I really thought I wouldn't be having a possible concern so soon after treatment.  

One nice thing is going to happen Friday.  My sister is coming to this appointment with me.  She is a nurse and I think she has lots of questions and needs answers.  I tried to tell her I will be fine and she doesn't need to switch her shift as a nurse to come with me but she really wants to do this.  I am looking forward to having a day with her though.

I'm so glad your sister could  go with you!  Just enjoy your time with her!  I know it isn't easy to have these darn scares, just when you think you're getting your life back on track, but, I bet everything will be fine.

It really took the wind from my sail, but, it turned out ok after further testing, which I am sure your doctor will do too.
