Hi - we're all bunkered in -
Hi - we're all bunkered in - live just north of Boston (Methuen). Things are picking up outside, and I hear they're only going to get worse. Got plenty of food, though, and the candles and flashlights are at the ready. Hope we don't lose power. Hoping all those in the storm area are safe and warm!

Hi there. I am a bit south of you, along the coast. The snow is coming down, but not heavy. I just got finished cooking some foods before we lose power. Fingers crossed that we don't lose power until much later! They say it will stop tomorrow night.
I searched all over town for a battery operated coffee machine........no luck. Good idea for a new invention.0 -

I searched all over town for a battery operated coffee machine........no luck. Good idea for a new invention. My brother camps quite often and I bought him a press coffee maker, no electricity or batteries required - he says it makes great coffee. Got it from LLBean. A little late to get it now, but maybe for the next (NOT!) storm.

Blizzard supplies
Again, this will come too late for this storm, but you can buy an all inclusive electric range type eye contraption that runs off of canisters of butane. (The cannisters are about the size of a spray paint can.) I have one that has a case and it was around $50 I think, and I recently saw one at a hardware/gift store that did not have a case and it was $38. The cannisters are around $6-$7 each I think, but I haven't bought any in a while. You could at least use something like that to heat up a can of soup or make bacon & eggs, etc... to have something warm. You can also get the little grills that run off of gas cannisters too (a different size cannister) if you have a well ventilated place like a garage, etc....in which to use it. We don't get blizzards very often down here in NC or my home state of TN, but we do occasionally and since we don't have the snow removal equipment like up north, we really are socked in for days when it does happen. We are more likely to get ice storms which bring down the power lines too. Below is one link and you can just Google "portable cooking stations".
Hope all "weather" the storm OK.

Thanks. I love that! That's what I need. I can live without warm food, but not without a hot cup of coffee!0 -
Coffee PressRoseC said:ummmm, good question
i guess it has to be heated up - oops! - maybe with campers they assume there's a fire nearby
I use a coffee press often. I used to work for Starbucks, and although I only have a cup or two a day, I NEED that cup or two. The water should be heated quite hot actually before brewing but if I had to I think I would drink it with room temp or cold! Maybe even heat a cup of water over a large candle??? I live in Wisconsin so we get a good share of bad storms and coffee is always on my list of needed items. We have lost power a couple times but just cooked outside on the grill, staying warm inside was harder for us...(no fireplace) Good luck, hoping all stay safe.

Hi from Yonkers, NY on Hudson River
We lost power for a week last time. The coolest thing we discovered which was almost a joke when I bought it was a Craftsman baseball cap with lights on it and a pair of magnifier glasses with lights. How cool. Hands free and you can see where you are going and read, etc. We are ready. I spent the morning at Sloan Kettering's Rehabilitative Medicine center (pelvic PT and Manual Lymphatic Drainage) and then went to Mt. Sinai for voice work, (aftermath of Pertussis). I was fighting my way through flying sleet, snow, etc. Kind of an adventure. But it wasn't too cold. (Helps to have a warm coat).
I live on one of the highest of 8 hills in Yonkers. We call it the Yonkers Alps. What a wonderland I came home to. The temperature is colder on this hill. According to the news, though, because we are on the West side and not the Long Island Sound, we will not get hit as badly as East of us. Oh my God, BOSTON!!!! You may have a record breaker.
We have very high Pine trees that worry me. The snow is terribly heavy. I hope the winds aren't too strong for them. I always feel uneasy when we have these conditions.
My treatment at Sloan was very painful today, but got better by the end of the sesesion. Could it be more inflammation because of drop in barometric pressure? I don't understand why I got worse inside otherwise. I do everything they tell me - Vitamin E suppositories, Replens, Vagifem, Aquaphor - "moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!" I am very discouraged. No intercourse still. Too bad since that's how we used to pass the time in a storm like this:-)
All the best
Sandy

Storm...omg
Hi All,
Sandy my daughter went to college in Bronxville, so I know Yonkers well!
This storm is one of the worst I have seen in my 60 years! I am a little south of Boston on the water. We lost power some time ago. No heat....brrrrr. The wind is unbelievable! It is downright scarey! I remember the blizzard of 1978 and I don't remember it being this windy. There are no lights as far as the eye can see.....just white and loud, loud wind with thundersnow and lightening flashes. I think it is too windy to light the fireplace at this point.
Yikes! Stay safe everyone.0 -

Last storm I tried the candle trick......didn't work. Really how hard could it be to create a hot pot that runs on batteries? Any engineers in the house?0 -

Morning is here and we have about 30 inches of snow. No heat, no power, bitter cold, roads closed. It is 31 degrees in here. Very cold. Nightmare. It looks terrible up there from what I am seeing on the news reports. I hope you will not be without power for long. I'm not sure this helps, but I send you warm thoughts!

Warm thoughts to you! I know I usually try to stay positive in awful situations but somehow the cold just gets the best of me and I become soooooo grumpy! I can't imagine the monster I'd be if I were there. Hope things get cleaned up soon!

We were lucky - didn't lose power. The snow's pretty high - my husband is just now heading out to start clearing off the cars. We're in a condo complex and have plowing services, which will help a lot. Good luck Marynb - hope the power comes on soon.

No power until next week. This country has become a third world nation and we are sinking quickly. There is just no reason that the electrical grid is this antiquated and outdated! Sad situation.Oh no! I'm sorry it's going to be that long without power for you. It looks wicked up there by all accounts on the news, but I agree, we, as a nation, are in serious need of adjusting our priorities so that people do not have to suffer so much through natural disasters. Sending you more warm thoughts and hoping you stay safe.
