A non-sence question

in Gynecological Cancers (other than ovarian and uterine) #1

Do you ladys that have cervical,vaginal,vulva, or any other gyn cancer (besides uterine, ovarian, or breast),have an Awareness Ribbon and if so, what colors are they?  I am making pins, hats, slippers for my local Cancer Center(M.D. Anderson here in Texas) and I would like to include everyone.  I tryed to look up the ribbons, but have not found much real info.  Hoping you all are not lumped into the "orphan"cancer heap.  Having UPSC uterine cancer,we kind of feel orphaned since there are not any drugs just for us...we take the drugs for ovarian.  Thanks, and best to each of you!  Debrajo(from the uterine board)

    No ribbon colors

    I have looked too for an awareness ribbon for vulvar cancer...there is none. I think teal is color for gyn cancers, and that is where we all end up. Best wishes and how kind of you to make items for your cancer center. I too k ovarian chemo drugs too, they did not work.

    Thanks dear,  I found a teal and white ribbon on one site for cervical cancer.  My sister-in-law has vulvar cancer with two reacurrance, but it is "taboo" to even ask how she is feeling!  Big,dark,dirty little family secret!  How stupid!  I admire your courage in talking plainly about the subject!  I know when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer over 27 years ago(she's still here!)the word"breast"was not spoken in mixed company, now it's all you hear!  Keep on bringing this terrible diease to the forefront!  Best, debrajo

    I appreciate your kind words. Honestly I don't know why anyone with any type of cancer would ever be ashamed  of talking about what they are going through, my goodness, cancer is cancer, who cares how it happened. I have had a few ignorant people tell me if I just ate this food, or drank this liquid, etc...you could cure your cancer. Leaving me and most other cancer patients to feel as if they did something up to that point of causing the apperance of their disease. I know there are certain things that we all do that can raise our risk, but even with that said, you don't kick a person when they are down. I had someone ask me if my cancer was a sexually transmitted disease, I said no, I have cancer. Cancer can appear anywhere on the body, it is sad when it happens in a very private area, but it is what it is. I decided 4 years ago that I would not be ashamed or embarrassed to talk about my vulvar cancer, in the process I am sure I have offended a few or embarrassed a few too...too bad, we all need to be aware of our bodies. Education is the beginning of understanding and compassion for another.

    Sorry, don't mean to be on my soapbox about this, I am thankful to have kinds words from people such as you, today has been a very hard day on me, but tomorrow will be a better day I'm sure.

    Tell your sister-in-law to Be Strong! Find someone to talk to this about, I am sure she has much inside of her that she wants to say. That is why I love this forum, you can say what you want , with no judgement. I wish her the best and wish she could be open about what it happening to her. She could private message from this forum with anyone she wants...if she wants too.

    I love your soapbox!  More people need to be on one!  I guess I thought every one in this day and age knew cancer could happen randomly.  I was surprised at educated people I have know for years, upon finding out I had cancer, literaly took a physical step back away from me!  My sister-in-law is a strange one.  I've tryed to get her here and to talk to me at least, but she is ASHAMED that THAT part of her body has a diease!  It's just another body part for Heavens sake that happened to have abnormal cells!  Thanks for the words of advice...today has been a rough one for me also, but tomorrow is another day!  You take care and have abetter day today!  Best, debrajo
