diet and nutrition, folate and colon cancer - for supplementers
Studies from University of Cairo Yield New Information about Diet and Nutrition
Dear Colorectal Friends Interested in Supplements,
This study maybe of interest, enjoy.
I hope some of our more experienced supplementers can fill in the caps, its worthy of a detailed discussion.
As a starting point

hugs,
Pete
PS does the study imply a diet high in folate may minimise colorectal cancer and have a role in preventing recurrence ?
thats what i hope it says, of course its just rats, but look how good the rat and mouse antibodies have been on me.
I did a post along time ago, Am I a man or a mouse. I am still wondering, certainly more mouse like these days.
PPS note LEF likes to sell supplements, I buy LEF supplements, but I prefer natural, hence the link. Think about what you put into the shopping trolley or order when out.

The article below seems to be of similar relevance. The net timing is Jan 24.2013. I could not download the article itself. the trial seems to be on humans (the summary says: "subjects")

Folate vs Folic Acid
Pete, one of our former members mentioned to me that she doesn't buy foods fortified with folic acid. She had found a study done in Chile about it being bad for us. I asked her if she remembered the details and this is a summary of what she said as I remember it.
Chile began keeping a record of cause of death of people who died in the hospital. They did not keep records of why people were admitted. They noticed a lot of colon cancer deaths among women of child bearing age. They started a study and interviewed the families of the victims to find out what they had in common. The major commonality was the use of Folic acid in pre-natal vitamins. Then they looked back at colon cancer death rates and found an increase in diagnosis and deaths from colon cancer after they began adding folic acid to fortify foods. The lady said the article ended with a remark about Chile planning further studies. She didn't remember the location of the article or the date of the article but said she had posted the information on here before she was banned, so a few years ago. I didn't bother to search today but did search awhile back to see if I could find the study.
Folic Acid is 'created' where Folate is naturally occurring in foods. I'll eat a bowl of cereal once in a while but try to not buy anything that says 'fortified'.
I searched just now and found these:

Thank you pete. As Ipete43lost_at_sea said:Thank you pete. As I suspected, the article is a bit older than the Cairo study.
Yet, folate seems to be important
Thank you again

I think folic acid as a subtitute for folates identical to the natural types was a mistake on an industrial scale.

Micro Nutrients and Macro Nutrients are both critical. Western Medicine has ignored the fact that the Micro Nutrients are there for a reason and they also have an affect on our health. Maybe the most obvious benefit is form the Macro Nutrients, but obviously the micro nutrients are there for a reason also.
When we isolate Macro Nutrients why do we believe that we are receiving the appropriate micro nutrients for good health?
Nutrition and Cancer are big puzzles that most doctors are not approaching scientifically. They rely on what a pharma company has told them, and not necessarily objective findings.
We are better served to obtain our nutrients from FOOD versus a processed pill. What did the processing take out? And/Or What did the processing not include? I do take supplements, and I also eat a very good diet. My B has been low for years, and it has gotten better via my diet, but still on the low of normal.
Juicing made sense to me, because of the additional micro nutrients added to my diet.
Just my two cents,
Best Always, mike

thanks guys, this illness is licked i pray one day soon
hopefully tans and ren will comment, folate and its derivatives have a crucial role in our biochemistry, a healthy discussion may help us be healthier.
not accepting these glossy studies out of context key.
the biochemistry of cancer more than one brain can fathom, but a few brains working together, well then we have hope and fun and we just might help a few friends into the life boats, and maybe even a seat for our on sore butt.
hugs,
pete
ps its 5 Days till i fly to germany and i need a twin to help me with all the jobs..
pps i am not advocating folate supplementtion at all, the research hit the inbox, i thought to share it, its relation to homocystiene more my focus.

This is an interesting study. I was diagnosed with stage iv cc at 36 years old after taking extra Folic acid and pre natal vitamins for a number of years as suggested by my GP. Makes me wonder if this was a factor in developing cc....

Hi Pete,
What is your research regarding Folic acid and homocysteine and colon cancer? I had high homocysteine levels and was of child bearing age, so my gp recommended an increased dose of Folic acid. I took this for a number of years.

When I had my first meeting with my onc. I asked him if I should eat a special diet or take vitamins...he said NO folic acid supplements.....

An alternative oncologist
An alternative oncologist that i am consulting with that I found the most sensible out of the half a dozen or so I tried recommended that I add B6, B12 and Folic Acid to my supplement regime. Though I trust and value his oppinion, I added B6 and B12, but did not add Folic Acid. I looked into Folic Acid and decided its not worth the risk. I eat spinach often to get enough Folate instead.
