some what off TOPIC-hysterectomy
Due to tamoxifen I had to have hysterctomy about 18mths ago (I will call to confirm with my gyno) but curious if others still go for pap, annual exams etc? MY breast surgeron (last month srugery on same side as cancer 4 yrs ago) asked me if i still have a cervix. I had not clue..i just know I told gyno to take everything at time of surgery-since he would not get me back in again..
any thoughts?

DeniseSo he just said a breast exam and didn't mention a pap???
I had a hysterectomy years ago at 48. I've had 2 pap smears since.I talked to a lady older than me and she told me years ago she never gets them aftert her surgery. Not that I feel safe but what's there but skin.My doctor told me he took EVERTHING.There were complications and he said he never wanted to go back in my belly again. I was told my cervic, ovaries uterus and anything else was gone.
My family doctor keeps me up on all exams.Blood tests, mammos, urine tests. Can't do the flu shot I'm allergic. She once mentioned a pap.I told her I don't know if I need one.Everythings gone. She hasn't mentioned it since. Even my gastro doctor and my breast surgeons never ask me if I keep up on it. i've had no bleeding etc.
I don't have friends or relatives to ask.No others had a hysterectomy. Next office visit in April I will ask her.

My beau, the GYN, just chimed in...
If it was a total hysterectomy, you no longer have a cervix. BUT, if you ever had abnormal pap smears before the hyster, it is a good idea to test the area in the vagina for awhile to make sure there is no vaginal cancer.
I don't have pap smears anymore. Hummm, I don't have offcial pelvic exams (blush) anymore, either. BUT, if abnormal bleeding starts, I'm off to my doctor...
BTW, I am laughing about the hands on your breast...I had all surgeries done at a teaching hospital...soooooo many people saw my body during that year!!! (Maybe that's why I sat topless on a beach in Barcelona...*grin*...I have no shame left...)

HAD total hystectomy but my breast surgeon last month asked if I still had a cervix-I said I have no clue..I assumed total meant NOTHING left...
I have had oncologist, surgeon, Mammo (about 25 total in month) techs handle me, the staff who put wire in prior to surgery, the techs that put in chip YOU get the picture... LIKE OK enough already..
When I called the office (gyno) said OH no you need to come in yearly...you have not been since surgery 18mths ago..
I have talked the dr several times when he got reports of biospy, surgery etc..very kind and caring and called me often..but must have not looked at my file as far as last time I was in..
