Loss of flexibility and strength after implants
I was very flexible in my arm and shoulder before my mastectomy with immediate reconstruction (arches, back bends, bridges). I have a tissue expander now and was wondering if anyone could speak to the issue of flexibility and upper body strength after the implant is in place.

your muscles have been cut to remove your
breast tissue. I had a double mastectomy which is also known as a bilateral -- my movements, along with my ability to lift heavier items was compromised for a while. I could not lift my arms above my shoulders for weeks.
What helped me was patience, and exercise regimen that Plastic Surgeon's office recommended. I also worked with a physical therapist to strength my arms, shoulders and back - 6 weeks after my bilateral surgery.
What type of exercises did your Surgeon recommend?
Good luck, and well wishes for a speedy recovery.

I agree with VickiSam, your post should not have been flagged. Your question is a good one.
I had a bila3eral and left axilla dissection with no reconstruction. I have some pretty serious adheasions on the left side which limit my mobility by3-5%. The left side also has lymphedema in the arm, chest, and back. A physical therapist helped me with strength and mobility more than anyone else. If you choose to go this route, try and find someone who has worked with mastectomy patients...you don't want to be their experiment. You doc/surgeon should be able to recommend someone.

Linda
