Vitamin D
Hi Molly,
63 is not bad but it is better to be between 70 and 75.
You are right your nurse doesn't know. I am a certified Health Counselor and studied this
right after I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
I keep mine in that range. I take 5,000 IU's of Vitamin D3 and I also take K2.
K2 helps the body obsorb the D3 better.
All the Best!

What is K2 ?? I was low on Virtamin D.Took 3,000 IU for 2 weeks and my level is normal. Now I am down to 1,000 iu but going to do some changes and take a one a day vitamin every day and go down on my 1,000 iu's to maybe 4 days a week not 7 and see what that brings my intake. Why I am so cautious is my doctor said he didn;t weant me to get to much.It can cause heart problems.I don't need that so got to do some figuriing. My family doctor told me to do Vit D3 4 days a week and add my multi vitamin every day to get close to my correct dosage of all vitamins I need.
What I come up with is take D3 4 days a week.Take my multi vitamin every day and it contains 400 iu of Vitamin D daily. That brings me to 6800 iu a week.I need to have 7000 so just slightly off. Maybe I will start laying in the sun this summer. Haven't for years but not sure my doctors will like it.

"K" usually refers to the mineral potassium which is designated on the Periodic Table as K. There is a Vit. K but my only experiences with it has been using it with horses with a disease that required elevating blood clotting and I had to pick it up daily from the Vet.
I do NOT lay out in the sun EVER but when weather permits I'm out most of the day. Being S.A.D., I've had to suppliment my D with pills and my light box in winter for close to 20 years.

You need to be asking your oncologist these things. We can get suggestions from the board, but it is best to always go back and ask your oncologist or primary doctor. It is just not safe to just taking any supplements without a doctor's care. Supplements can be good, but you CAN take too much and that is not good. I found this out when I was taking a vitamin E supplement. The breast surgeon recommended me taking it, but never took a blood level. It wasn't until a year later with a thorough blood testing workout that I found out that my Vitamin E levels were too high and that because of other health issues, wasn't good for me to take anyway.
ALWAYS FOLLOW THROUGH AND ASK YOUR DOCTORS!!! JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ON HERE HAS SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THINGS, DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT AUTOMATICALLY APPLIES TO OUR SPECIFIC SITUATIONS.
AGAIN, ASK YOUR ONCOLOGIST AND PRIMARY DOCTOR FOR WHAT SUPPLEMENTS TO TAKE, AND HOW MUCH AND GET BLODD LEVELS TESTED REGULARLY.
We can only suggest things on here and state what we went through. We are not a substitute for medical advice from our personal medical team.

I've never had
I've never had a doctor to go over my blood work.Just say its fine. Then 4 months ago I was low.Never told how low when called but when I was going in for some Vit IV therapy(with another doctor) my doctor called to say I was just slightly low on the B12.Then also the folic acid and Vit D.Still don't know where I stand and what is needed and how much.Just know my levels are good now with the IV.I am feeling much stronger too.
I'm going to ask for a copy of the reports from now on.I know they won't mind.Need to see where I stand.Like just right just slightly below etc.

K2 does help the body absorb D3 better, but it is NOT recommended for anyone taking anticoagulants - sometimes called blood thinners. Warfarin Sodium (aka Coumadin) is one of them that I take, following hospitalization for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) with Pulmonary Embolism. Blood clots in the legs is DVT, when they travel into your lungs it becomes Pulmonary Embolism. My Oncol said once my blood thickness levels off, he'll be controlling it with K2 after I stop taking coumadin. But he stressed I should avoid K2 at all costs while being treated. And yes, alot of vitamins and supplement drinks (like Ensure) contain K2.
Fuzzy hugs,Angela
