Two Accomplishments

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
Two accomplishments today:
1) I ordered a Grande Soy Mocha and did not have to repeat myself. The Barista got it the first time. (The reason this is an accomplishment is that I have had my vocal cords removed and talk by esophageal speech.)

2) I ate peanut butter. (The reason that this is an accomplishment is that my esophagus is severely restricted.) Actually I did not have any trouble with peanut butter. I guess the accomplishment was getting up enough nerve to try it.

    If cancer has taught me anything it is that little things can matter, but speaking without vocal cords sounds huge to me.

    The drink sounds really, and peanut butter in itself has tons of good stuff for you.

    I agree any accomplishment is something to make a big deal out of. I remember when I had to give up ordering at drive thrus because they could not understand me, so one day I noticed on most ordering signs it said if you need special assistance please drive to the window for assistance, so I tried that and they still did not understand me, so Diane or whom ever was with me had to order. So now that I can order again it is worthy of an accomplishment after this lousy disease. So good for you and enjoy the peanut butter.

    As I'm sitting here eating (with difficulty) my English muffin with peanut butter I can't help but smile at your post. I'm so happy for you because peanut butter is one of my favorites but boy is it a tough one for me! As far as the ordering your coffee, I can semi relate to that as well. Only on a slight level. My SCC was vocal cord Stage IV. I've had many many excisions and biopsies (11 total) on my cords and then of course rads and chemo. What I'm left with is a very raspy voice and many people can't hear me when I walk up to a counter and order. Noisy places are bad, drive thrus are almost impossible and those darn automated phone systems are the worst....."I'm sorry but your response couldn't be heard".......ugh!

    Good for you for having such a great day of success, keep up the good work.

    HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT
    I like reading things like this because from time to time I struggle with exactly what you just overcame and get a good tip or too from your post.

    This is where this journey gets to be the ultimate one to one iron man challenge, kind of like weightlifting. What is a battle to you, it the mountian you try to climb.

    I expect to hear many more conquers as time goes forward.

    I know the frustration you feel when you talk, having a mom with the same problem...no vocal cords. This was a wonderful accomplishment.

    I still can't do peanut butter...I put it in my mouth, and it turns into glue...LOL. Gotta have spit to do peanut butter.

    No accomplishment is small in this business!!!
