Recurrence

in Breast Cancer #1
I just had a skin sparing double mastectomy for a 1cm DCIS tumor (comedo type, high nuclear grad 3, fast growing abnormal cells). A friend mentioned that even with the BM, cancer could still return.

Any ideas or or experience with this?

    There is always a chance, no matter how remote, that cancer can come back. However, your cancer was caught very early and there is a great chance that you will be fine.

    I hate "friends" that mention this kind of stuff. I believe this should be between you and your doctor.

    BTW, I had a neighbor who told me all about how she knew someone just like me (Stage 3) who suffered a terrible death. That was 25 years ago! And now, she looks less healthy than I do...lol. I hate to say it serves her right, but.... (I know I will get coal in my stocking for even thinking this way ;-)).

    The BM should really, really help your chances. I know you are scared as I was so scared the first 5 years or so after diagnosis and treatment, but, hang in there, things will get better!

    Please discuss this with your Oncologist. Ask for clinical studies that show
    recurrence, and/or, survivor rates.

    I can NOT tell you how many stories - I hear while battling the beast of loved
    one dying -from people I don't know. Having a bald head however it's dressed with
    a hat or scarf opens the door for odds conversations, as it does when people find
    out that you have cancer.

    After a while I just smiled, and said sorry that you lost your mom, grandmother,
    aunt, etc.

    Put 1 foot in front of the other, and continue on with your journey.
