I had no mouth sores whatsoever. I had a very thorough teeth cleaning before treatment started, at the direction of the doctors. I rinsed my mouth several times a day with salt water rinse. I do not consume chemicals, so things like Ensure, Jello, and Gatorade were never part of my diet. I would not suggest putting those chemicals into your body while being treated for cancer! Stick with natural, whole foods and you should be fine. You will want to totally avoid acidic foods and sugars during treatment. Lots of water and protein.0 -

The salt water rinses sound like a great idea. Do you remember the salt to water ratio that you used? As for the teeth cleaning, I had one a few months ago and can't really afford another right now(I'm actuallly in the process of paying the dentist now).0 -

Hi. I have my teeth cleaned every 3 months and they told me at the hospital to avoid mouth sores, have it done right before treatment. I was also told to use the salt water rinse at least 3x daily. One teaspoon in 8 oz. glass of spring water, room temp. I never had any mouthsores at all.0 -

Sucking on ice during chemo
Sucking on ice during chemo helps prevent mouth sores too. Start 15 minutes before treatment.
The salt water rinse works great, and I did both.0 -
Biotene
I used Biotene mouth rinse. I also had a small spray bottle I kept with me ... I had mouth sores and it wasn't pleasant . This product helped me ... Topical so you don't swallow.
FYI ... Be careful about taking vitamins during treatment. For example, vit C and possibly others in high dise can be an antagonist of antineoplastics. If u take lots of supplements, might chat with oncologist about his/her opinion.. I know u did not mention vitamin supplements, however you sound pretty healthy and just wanted to mention.0 -

yeah, thanks for the heads up... I don't take LOTS of supplements (actually, I only take magnesium, vit D and sometimes B complex but that's all) but I have and have had for many years terrible insomnia. There's an herb I want to try but think it might be contraindicated with the chemo so I've printed out the info to show to the medical oncologist on Thursday. Funny thing is, after, I think, 4 proceedures over two years, (and two in the last 2 weeks) all using propophol, AND as an insomniac, I can understand Michael Jackson's affection for the drug. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs or even take an aspirin unless I absolutely have to, for me to say "wow I LIKE that!" about ANY drug is saying a lot.0 -

yes, I meant to ask about that. Is ice something the chemo place usually has on hand?0
