That is awesome how that
That is awesome how that works so well. My husband started on probiotics after 2 bouts with c-diff and it has made a world of difference also. Kim0 -

Does he get the probiotics from yogurt or some other food source? Im really interested in this but am not sure where/how to get the probiotics.
Thanks, Cindy
I don't know which is the best source...natural food such as yogurt or the capsul form you can buy. Perhaps a natural food/health store would be able to help you determine what is best.

What he takes
We truly hope this helps some people. **** is taking Jarro-Dophilus original. 6 Beneficial probiotic strains, 3.4 billion per capsule. He has stopped using Immodium since taking the probiotic three times a day. Also he is not constipated.

I'm a firm believer in getting vitamins etc from food instead of pills. I had a terrible bout of diarrhea about a year ago and when I started having a glass of acidopholus (sp) milk and at least two servings of kefir every day, it cleared it right up within just 2 or 3 days. Greek yogurt is also very good, my opinion it's better than regular yogurt.0 -

Thanks for the info, Kathleen. Diarrhea is so terrible and probiotics are so wonderful at helping to end it. One of the big problems with antibiotics is that it kills bacteria indiscriminately. There are so many good buggies in our systems that fall victim and when they're gone we get diarrhea. It's so important to replace them somehow.0 -
Thank you!
I just shared this in an Appendix Cancer FB group, because so many of our problems and issues are the same as for colon cancer. I know we have a number of people with diarrhea issues from chemo (and the systemic chemos used for Appendix Cancers are the same as those used for colon cancer.)
Many thanks,

Question: is this okay during chemo?
I recall being advised against probiotics during chemo (but that was 4 years ago.) What is the current recommendation? Are the probiotics for general diarrhea post-treatment, or is this for during chemo?
Friends have asked...
Thanks again,

I found Kefir probiotic cultured milk smoothie at oue local Aldi food store. The bottle says it has 10+2 live, active kefir cultures in it. Im guessing this may be a good thing to chug a couple times a day.
I am so grateful for this thread. It posted at the time when my bowels were almost out of control. I cant take immodium any longer. Thanks for all the info.
Oh yeah, our local Aldi foods also has big Salmon fillets too for $6.99 each. They look really good. Frozen but hey cheap enough compared for what we would pay for them at Sams.0 -
Thank you so much
for posting this information. I have been faithfully drinking Kefir probiotic cultured milk smoothies since I read this post.
I cannot believe how much better I can hold my bowels. I still take an emergency bag when Im going out but I have only needed it a couple of times. I believe my problem is going to just keep getting better until its no longer a problem.
Thanks again, Cindy0 -
This helps
What truely helped me with diarrhea during chemo was a diet a nurse told me about. Rice, apple sauce, bananna and toast. Small portions of each (organic). I also added green and ginger tea. It is gentle and really helps.0 -

I asked my sister's oncologist about her using probiotics during chemo.
He said it was ok. He had no real opinion regarding its benifit...I didn't tell him about our own group of "in the know" folks here...lol.
She will be taking carboplatin and taxol, which of course is differnt that what is used for colorectal treatments.
I guess when in doubt, best to ask the onc you are seeing.
Hugs to all,

question
is this something that can cause constipation? Has your dr said that most of his patients have success with this vs immodium? (I know immodium doesn't seem to help too much for my aunt) I honestly don't know anything about probiotics and will ask my aunt's oncologist on the 21st but I'd like to know a bit of information before just walking in there and asking blind.
Thanks in advance, Marianne0 -

Hi Marie,
I just read your post and know when my Father-in-law had C-Diff a few years ago, they recommended Culturelle as the best. I've also read on other forums about Pearls being good since they don't get ruined in the stomach acid before making it to the colon where they are needed, since they have a delayed desolving coating. I know the Culturelle works since my Father-in-law never had a recurrance of his problem. Good Luck!! Kandy0 -

Thanks in advance, MarianneHi, everyone it was been awhile since I posted. I just finished reading some of the postings regarding probiotics, going to be looking into them. My Oncogolist speaks highly of it. I seriously need to do something I have been going thru since 2009.
