Advice for neck burn

My husband completed 30 radiation treatments to right neck on this past Wednesday. Was doing pretty good but last two days his neck has become blistered, dark red and extremely painful. I knew this was going to happen but just feel so awful for him. I know some of you veterans on the site have experience with this. We are putting Aquaphor ointment on it. Just wondered what else you all have used, how long till it starts to improve and any other help you can offer is so appreciated.

In advance thanks for all you guys do for me.

Joan

    silver sulfadiazine
...is anti-bacterial cream for second- and third-degree burns.

took quite a few weeks for my burn to heal. actually it started small about two weeks after radiation ended, and spread. radiation can cook for quite a while. but the SS helped.

Lots for Aloe Vera gel used here....
you can use all you want and it cools when it's applie (also a healer)....when I went to bed i used Calendula cream for baby's butts....Matt and Tim had a prescription cream, Silver something...that they use for burn victims...maybe put a call into your Rad onc and see if they'll prescribe some over the phone??

    Hi Joan
I heard about Calendula cream from many others and i started it as soon as the redness began. I have 5 rads left (thank God!!!) and Dr's say my neck looks pretty good for this stage. Calendula can be used as often as you like and applied liberally. Can be found in nearly any natural food store.
It's working for me, hopefully for your husband too.
    God bless,
    Alan

Ok, thanks everybody. I will call tomorrow and check with dr.

Alan, we were doing good until yesterday. Now it looks so bad. On last day of radiation, which was Wed his skin wasn't too bad, not its definitely like a 2nd degree burn. Good luck to you during your last 5...you're almost there...yipee.

    love the stuff
    Hi Joan,

As BSB said Silver Sulfadiazine Cream is the ticket. I had neck burns during weeks 6, 7, & 8, for me it was the worst pain I experienced during treatments. The cream absolutely took all the pain away. You slather it on generously and enjoy the relief. Mine looked like a turtle neck. It is messy for your shirt and pillow case, but that is minor compared to the pain relief. If it is bad buy the 400 gram container not the 50 gram. Good Luck!

    Silver magic
Nelson also used the silver sulfadiazine cream for his burns. It worked wonders! Once the burns crusted, we switched to alternating with Aquaphor and the healing was amazing. His skin was back to almost normal in a few weeks.
He still uses the aquaphor occasionally since his skin is much drier than before treatment. Awesome stuff.

    Burn
I was lucky and mine just turned very dark brown but I have used Silver Sulfadiazine for burns in the past and also swear by it. I wonder if Aquapfor might seal the heat in, like butter on a burn. As a kid it was the thing to do but now it is discouraged.

Sorry, the stuff that was prescribed is actually Biafine Topical Emulsion. I have been happy with the results so far but I am only starting week 5 of radiation.

    Silver Sulfadiazine Cream here....
Just started using about 2 weeks ago when the blistering, peeling, bleeding started. Before that was the Aloe Vera gel. But, this Silver Sulfadiazine Cream is very soothing. Just as Tim6003 told us about it, they prescribed it before asking for it. Your hubby will get relief from this.

Btw.....we only have Monday/Tuesday left of tx as they are make up days from Thanksgiving and Friday off. He meets with Rad/Onc Monday to discuss where they believe he is at..praying no extra days will be considered.

Hope all goes well with you guys...

We are going to ask for the Silvdene cream tomorrow. I just feel so bad everytime I put lotion on his neck so hoping that the Silvadene will help.

How many radiations has your hubby had? I hope he is done with the rads after tomorrow. Enough is enough , right? That's how I felt at the end of treatment. I just wanted it done.

    Keep in touch.

    I tried Silver Sufadiazine
at 1st loved the feeling but hated the mess. I would wake up thur the nite feeling slimy from the ointment. Then i would go to the bath to try to remove it and the dead skin, it hurt like heck I would use a wash rage because the cream seemed to stick to the skin or roll up into little balls that I had to manually remove. It was a tought 2 weeks. My Doc even ordered morphine be blended in to the cream to help with the pain, the thought of morphine was to much for me to handle. I knew by the time I awoke I had creame all over me my cloths and pillow cases and the last think I wanted was morphine getting into my mouth or eyes. May have over analyzed the problems with morphine and perhaps should have taken them up on it, either way roughest portion of my tx in my opion, but as with all the other crazy parts of the journey I made it and he will to.
