incision biopsy

I am not sure IF I understood correctly...but I THINK understood it correctly...incision biopsy like lumpectomy but smaller incision?!

Any knowledge of this...

I have to schedule surgery (going fri for official date and procedure) due to ultra sound had spot not shown on Mammos. Patholgoy came back OK...but spot/ area must be removed.

    I have had pretty much every biopsy, that I know of. So I did have one that was "open" and it was like a biopsy. I never did get as far as to see what the extent of a lumpectomy would be as they never had margins. But in your case I would think the incision size depended on the size of area taken out and the surgeon

    Having just had an excisional biopsy/lumpectomy
    My understanding is that an incisional biopsy is a surgical biopsy where they take a portion of the questionable mass to test. An excisional biopsy is when they excise the entire mass, ideally with margins, and many consider it to be equivalent to a lumpectomy. I had a double excisional biopsy, losing 2 large chunks of breast tissue (about 3"x1"x3/4" each) which is tantamount to a double lumpectomy.

    Some people only use the term "lumpectomy" when it is removal of a cancer. Others agree that it is when a questionable mass in its entirety is removed.

    Essentially, I've gone through what you're going through. The spot biopsied in the u/s guided core needle biopsy was benign, but needed to be removed surgically anyway. In addition, I had another mass that appeared in the mammo after the core needle biopsy. They wanted the spot removed, because the type of benign growth I had can hide more nefarious cells.

    The surgery isn't that major; I've just had a series of very uncommon complications in my recovery. However, initially, I felt pretty good.

    Excisional or incisional biopsy

    With this type of biopsy, a surgeon cuts through the skin to remove the entire tumor (called an excisional biopsy) or a small part of a large tumor (called an incisional biopsy). This is often done using local anesthesia or regional anesthesia (drugs used to make the area numb). If the tumor is inside the chest or abdomen (belly), general anesthesia is used (drugs are used to put the patient into a deep sleep so no pain is felt).

    Thanks all...I am going to tell him I want whole spot removed and some good margins of healthy tissue since I will not be going back to have % removed at time of this procedure..

    I am very small chested to start with...I gained some I say from the tamoxifen (NOT weight gain)

    I say I should get discount for mammos and surgery since so little to do..

    I decided to have surgery
    I decided to have surgery next wed to partial Mastectomy (aka another lumpectomy) ONLY in ultra sound can SEE the questionable "SPOT"! I was told I could wait 3-4 mths and have another ultra sound but I decided to have the SPOT removed. I told the breast surgeon to take it all and then some good tissue-since he will not get me back in there again.

    I could go back to work the next day BUT I got a note for 3 days. (Wed surgery then 2 days)

    Is it worth having an MRI
    Is it worth having an MRI first? That might be able to show if the spot needs to come out. However, I'm with you in getting it gone, and not having to worry about it again.

    I am seeing a BREAST surgeon
    I am seeing a BREAST surgeon this time. IN Past genreal surgeon-I know a friend who using him and likes him! I asked why I have NOT have ultra sounds yearly-only one prior to my surgery-he said it is not common practice. (MY SPOT can ONLY be seen on ultrasound-so I am hoping it has not been there for 4 yrs and getting larger)

    I have to go talk to my boss, as soon as he is free. (not too often)

    We'll see how this flies...it's only 3 days...but never a GOOD time to not come in.

    When I went in for my baseline mamogram
    the ex ray tech saw some suspicious cells even though they thought they had clean margins at the time of surgery. The doctor thought it was scar tissue or microcalcifications rather than cancer. We both decided to take them out because of the size of my original tumor. I also did not want anything questionalble to need further monitoring. I went in for a reincision of those suspicious cells and they went to pathology. They were not cancer and they got them all. Now in December they will do another baseline mamogram and there should be no question about any cells.

    I think it is a good idea
    I think it is a good idea that you are seeing a breast surgeon instead of a general surgeon (although some specialize in breast, but are still called general). I agree with other posters to ask the surgeon if an MRI would help? My surgeon had me get one pre-surgery and I was relieved. Could you afford an MRI?

    I do hope your surgery and recovery goes well and that your results are benign!

    NO mention of it-I wont see the surgeon until just prior to surgery...

    Denise .. I agree with Alice, here ..
    I had both excisional biopsy, followed several months by a lumpectomy .. 3 years later
    same breast, same area -- breast cancer - DCIS.

    I am sorry to ask .. but, why isn't your doctor checking any lymph nodes out -- unless,
    he wants to review the site, and path report before proceeding.
