avastin anyone taking this now?

in Lung Cancer #1
Hello my name is gina and i have stage4 andenocarcinoma nsclc, i have mets to bones. I did 3 rounds of carbo/ alt. i have to say chemo so far has been kind to me.I had a catscan and they cant even see the tumor, i have a node that was 3.4cm now 1.6cm. my doc who i love and trust wants me on avastin.. I am little scared with the side effect i read.. i know we are all different on how the drugs effect us, but just need to hear some stories. also survivors stories.. anyone a long time survivor?? thanks

    Hi,
    My name is Carole & I am afraid of Avastin. My husband died 2 & 1/2 years ago from it cause he had one of the very rare side effects. He had been diagnosed in January with lung cancer and only had 2 treatments. After the first one his ankles swelled up alot and we went to emergency. When he went for his next check up, they did a scan & said everything looked great & the tumor was shrinking. We were so happy. Then on the night of Mar. 25th, he was fine all day & nite. Had eaten some yogurt and we watched Tv. At 10:00 he said he was going up to brush his teeth. Well, ten minutes later he pounded on the floor and when I went up there he was hemmoraging (very rare side effect). He started to collapse & after I laid him down I called 911. They got there quick & worked on him for quite awhile, but it was too late.
    Maybe alot of people have been helped by Avastin, but I would never take it.

    read your post from another post a few weeks ago.. i am so very sorry for the loss of you husband.. I know that was a rare case.. I was also scared but then again lung cancer kills also.. did they find anything else wrong with him> did he only have lung cancer?
    I read so stories and feel people have other issues beside lung cancer.. LIke heart, live, kidney, high bp, copd.. age.. i am now on avastin so far so good.. i heard more good then bad so.. thanks :)

    After I posted my last comment I felt bad. Didn't want to discourage you, but Avastin scares me. There is also a site about Avastin deaths. My husband was always healthy & very fit. No heart problems, or high blood pressure or anything. He started having a back ache which we thought was from all the yard work he did in summer. When it wasn't getting better, he went to the doctor. He had lesions in his spine from the lung cancer. But had radiation and they disappeared. They said it was from the Avastin that he hemmoraged. I will never, never forget that night. Anyhow, I hope you keep having good results.

    I am being treated for nsclc stage lV. I also have diverticulli disease. My ongologist's choice of chemo was Taxol/carboplatin/Avastin. After the first round I had a bout with diverticulitis and put on antibiotics. After the second round I ended up in the hospital with an abcess on my colon. Thank God it healed over, for if it could have been very serious had my colon perforated. My ongologist said that the Avastin probably was the reason, and I would not be receiving it again.

    Hi, I'm glad you won't be receiving Avastin anymore. There is a web site that really tells alot about it. It's pretty scarey reading all that can happen. We had so much hope when my husband started it, but never expected the side effect which was very rare (hemorraging) would kill him. I always thought we would be here for each other and now I'm alone.
    I just wissh they could find a cure for all cancers.

    A Data Problem:
    What is needed is better (that is, more complete) data. It is really a computer science/technology problem, not a medical problem as such. By this I mean that the problem needs to be tackled by computer science people, not necessarily medical doctors or professionals in the biological sciences.

    Amazon analyzes over a trillion emails and tweets every day. They are trying to find out what is popular. If a trillion posts can be analyzed every day, surely the outcomes and side effects of treatments can be analyzed.

    Once the data is compiled and sorted into neat bins, the data can be turned over to the medical professions to be incorporated into treatment plans.

    The first step is to generate questions. What would we like to know? What do we expect that there is data out there to answer?

    I think a lot of computer science professionals would jump at a chance of applying their skills on a socially relevant project. Finding the most efficient therapy would be more satisfying than finding the most popular smart phone app. Rick.
