craving sweets
Hi Cindy
It has been 8 years since my treatments, My radiation was very intense and fried my salivary glands and taste buds. any thing sweet tastes like vingar, and salt tastes sweet. a mouth full of sea salt tastes like a mouth full of sugar. I do crave both but I can't taste most foods. Chocolate is very bitter. if your are interested I posted a story in the expression gallery. Throat cancer, its long term effects from a suvivor0 -

Hondo makes some interesting points unintentionally. (If you read this person's posts, you will discover after a number of them that he mainly makes no points: he welcomes and invites and leaves it to others to say anything of substance).
I look at it like this: if God didn't mean for man to invent a car, he wouldn't have let man invent a car. He wouldn't have given man the ability to change radio stations or use his turn signal (some members of the species apparently cannot do the latter).
Did God invent your car, Hondo? Did he? And if not, why do you drive a car? Just wondering.
If God hadn't meant for man to invent man-made sugar substitutes then man would not have been permitted to do so, or so I suppose.
"Little Sister"?
"Just stay away from eating the bag?"
Geez.
How dare this person, first, call you his sister? How dare him, second, to insinuate that you might eat the entire bag without his advice?
Cindy, I DON'T love you. I don't even KNOW you. And I, to be honest (something I am, apparently to a fault), can't point you to comforting christian scripture -- but I care about you for reasons that are probably too complex for you to understand, based on your response to this Hondo person.
I will say this, and then leave you alone in these boards: if you want to eat sweets at a time when you can eat little else, then you should eat them. As others have rightly indicated, often it is the sweet taste that comes back first.
Joe
I welcome the diverse points of view that this list brings. I think everyone should be able share their unique point of view without flaming and hurtful remarks. It makes it harder to read the good info that is in each post when it is wrapped in hurtfulness.0 -
Cravings and cooking showsLandranger25 said:Hi Cindy, I have not
Hi Cindy, I have not experienced any cravings since my treatment ended 3 months ago. I found it very interesting that during the time frame when I couldn't eat and was using my PEG that my interest in cooking shows went through the roof. I found myself taking notes while watching with the thought that as soon as I could eat again I was going to try what ever it was I was watching. I also had some cravings for fresh fruit during this time but when I tried found the citric acid just way too much. At this point, I'm just eating back to normal, no cravings or desire for anything special. Just trying to eat well and get some of my weight back. Good luck.
Mike
I'm 18 months out today and the last 3-4 months I have also had massive sweet cravings. I satisfy the urges, but with very small portions. I am going to talk with Dr. on Monday. I laughed my buns off at Cindy's comment. I too became a cooking show addict while I had my peg tube in. Still can't pass when "Chopped" is on. Stay Positive!0 -
My opinion for what it's "worth..."
I know this is old thread but clearly folks still read replies since it attracted me in 2017. Having said that:
First off - I am still being diagnosed. A 1cm lump already being expressed as malignant found on my first mammogram. Already have symptoms of advanced cancer and believe in time it will show my breast cancer is not the primary. I will be shocked if it is, because I strongly feel like the base cancer will be found to be melanoma... Time will tell.
However... Lately I noticed that I have absolutely no appetite unless I'm munching on sweets. I do think that there's a connection between flavor and smell that real foods just are not having any kind of flavor for me yet I can taste the sweets and that becomes appealing.
However... I can't personally find any Facts that prove that Sugar feeds cancer. Regardless of whether cancer Is attached to glucose levels or not is irrelevant once cancer exists, period. If folks expect me to believe that cancer is going to "go away" (or stop Mets) if you give up sugar, then they think I'm a fool and will also try to sell me oceanfront property in Arizona. After all cancer develops a blood source. If it was really that relevant to cancer, everybody who was ever diagnosed would be immediately informed to stop taking sweets. That's just common sense and I have to say I get so frustrated with all the fear p*** that I come across online when it comes to cancer.... It's like with some of this information you might as well tell me that my horoscope can cure my cancer.
When I first acknowledged that I was craving sweets like crazy, I thought maybe it was a diabetic issue? But I've been stable for years and no diabetes. Now that they found this mass in my breast, I've noticed that my sugar Cravings have almost doubled if not tripled. Like 80% of my diet is me snacking on M&Ms or a cookie Etc. While I agree this isn't healthy... Part of me suspects that the underlying reason this is is because cancer literally starts eating you up and depleting all your nutrients including calories. Thus the rapid weight loss most of us experience. I myself experienced a drop of 60 lb in less than a year for no reason. I personally think that the reason why I'm craving so many sweets is because it's my body craving something it needs... Aka the calorie and fat that my body can survive off of. Perhaps it slows down the rate in which your muscle is depleted? I've noticed that since my Cravings have increased almost double, my weight has been maintaining... Although I don't dismiss that I can tell I'm having weakening of the muscles. So it's not a fix, but I wonder if there's a link to the body just needing something to feed off of...?
And, while I'm not saying it's right, I can't help but to wonder if my body doesn't know what it's doing. There's an old wives tale that you only have cravings because there's something in that item that your body needs. You may crave chocolate because your body needs the antioxidants or possibly even iron? Calcium? Who knows?
Personally I think it's an interesting correlation with cancer because I was noticing it and then I come and find other people experience the same thing. It's unfortunate that studies aren't being done on these types of correlations. So many symptoms people share, I only find on forums like these; and not in clinical studies or medical studies. It's quite depressing when you think about it. For example I noticed I was having ear drainage that was waxy in consistency, and that my body odor changed and just my right armpit - to where, even with deodorant, I would instantly have Funk within minutes of the day. Even right after a shower... But just in my right armpit. Turns out that's where my mass is... On the right side of my breast with a firm area in my armpit that still needs to be looked on Via an ultrasound next week... And then I do research online and find out that other women experienced this ear drainage and funky body odor prior to their breast cancer diagnosis. But it's not being reported in the studies as possible early detection! Or detection period, for women who don't have any kind of symptoms...
Just my two cents....

Sweet, Salty, and a touch of Sour
Three months after radiation and things still tase like sea-soaked carboard most of the time. I crave sweet things but after the first bite it's too dispointing. Anything spicy is hurts too much. I was very suprised that pistacios tasted as bland as they did.
A strong memory of something you like can help. If I can focus on the texture of a familar food and the memory of it; sometimes i can ignore the current taste.good luck
