Even if the redness is better, you could still have an infection. I hope it isn't, but, call your doctor.
Hugs, Diane
I know I sound like a broken record, but, you really need to see your doctor. Call him, go the ER, but, do something.

Hi Kay -- I hope you calledheart-in-hand said:I didn't get a chance to get on here all day...
wicked day at work. But, after the day the redness is now just in one place instead of over the whole breast...hurts like heck too. I didn't even think about it all day because work was so bad. When I saw the breast surgeon on Tues. he said that the pain was normal and would not go away for months. But it wasn't red or hot then...so I wonder if it is because I was using a hedge trimmer yesterday and overworked those muscles? If it returns to the whole breast I will call him, per your advice dear sisters. I need you!
Thanks,
Kay
Hi Kay -- I hope you called your Dr. so you can have peace of mind and treat whatever needs to be treated. I too had a lumpectomy and had the same side effects you're having except mine was not an infection but a form of edema in the breast. After I finished radiation, which was last Aug. (2011), the hotness and redness continued, and after one year I still feel it. So don't be surprised if this isn't an infection but a form of edema. Did you get drainage after surgery? I didn't. You need to get a straight answer from your Doctor though to figure out what it is. If it is an edema, I was advised to do acupuncture (NOT in the breast, but further away from it). This is something to be discussed with the Dr. as well.
Good luck to you. I hope you feel better very soon.0 -

Please make the appointment. I hope it's nothing and you end up feeling silly for "bothering" the docs. If it is an infection and your body is dealing with it, it still might need some antibiotic help. You had breast surgery. Infection happens. You need to be concerned and to pay attention to these changes - even if it's "normal healing". Remember, your body hasn't done this before and you really don't know what is normal and what is trouble.
I just felt silly Thursday. I felt something in my right breast. I couldn't decide if it was ok or not. I had a talk with myself and decided it was better to go get it checked and feel silly than to ignore something important and be sorry. I'm not sorry I went even tho the verdict was "normal breast tissue". Whew.

My breast stayed red for some time after rads and I didn't think much about it, but then my gyno didn't like it several mos later when I saw her and I had cellulitis (sic) and spent many months on antibiotics. Please get it checked.0 -
It's Sunday - What did you do?
Dear Kay,
I hope you called your doctor. It's Sunday and how are you doing? Never a good time for something to activate, just before the weekend. Lesson to be learned...red is not a good sign and do not wait till Monday to call the doctor. Always, always, always call the doctor. It is far better to be safe than sorry.
I speak from experience. Infection started on Wednesday (unknown to me), got better, then got worse. Call doctor's office and spoke to nurse on Friday. Wrong decision there as nurse did not feel that I had an infection. Saturday while taking a shower the infection burst through my skin.
Hope you are okay.
Lots of Hugs,

I am shocked just at how many have infection these days, was unheard of for my early years. I too have had infection and how quickly it can turn into a raging blood infection so this is nothing to play around with. Septisemia a reality I am afraid.
Also infection lies dorment until our body becomes the perfect host and that is when our immune systems are trashed by chemo or illness.

I am going to see the doctor tomorrow, Tuesday.

Mild Edema
Thankfully it was not an infection. I didn't have a drain but had to go weekly to have fluid removed. The exercise I had the day before caused more fluid to accumulate and the doctor said that is what caused the redness. He said there was no infection. This was the last time I will see him until next April.
Thank you to everyone for your concern!
