Finished with Chemo!!! Who knows about Chemo Port Removal Side Effects?
I know I have not been on here in a while. I actually locked myself out of the account. I had to do 6 chemo sessions. My 1st & 2nd went fine.Third chemo they accessed my chemo port twice and it would not work. I had to receive chemo in my left arm that day. I had to have a contrast dye test done by radiology to check to see if Cather wires of port were blocked. They were not blocked they had just slipped all the way down and were resting on the small veins of my liver. The radiologist told me that whenever they needed blood return from my port that I have to stand up. Well on October 22nd, I will be having my chemo port removed. I am a little worried about having it removed will make me feel a little weak for maybe 1 or two days. Can anyone tell me what to expect after having a Chemo Port removed? Hope everyone has been doing well.

Mine Was Easy To Remove
Although I had mine removed many years ago, I had no problems. It was taken out in the morning, I went home to rest and felt good enough by late afternoon to go for a walk. I was going to take 2 days off from work but went back the next day. It was the easiest procedure I ever had. Hope yours will be too.
You have been through the worse, this will more than likely be easy for you.

Still have mine so don't know about taking it out.
My port was put in 25 Aug '09 and iit will stay til Aug '14 at least. To me - being IBC - it makes sense to keep it in and do monthly flushes til I make it to 5 years just in case it's needed again rather than having a 2nd port surgery to implant a new one. We are all different but I visualize it as my little soldier standing guard to keep the monster at bay BUT if the Monster raises it's ugly head y it's there ready for battle.

Port removal was very easy for me. The surgeon and I chit chatted the whole time, procedure right in one of his exam rooms. It took about half hour from start to finish. My port always worked very well and I am hoping that the problems you've had will still make it easy for you. Congrats on finishing chemo.0 -

My surgeon removed mine in his procedure room right at his office. He numbed the area and had me turn my face toward the other side. There was some tugging and pulling but no pain at all. Start to finish it took about 15 minutes. Afterward, he put in a couple of dissolveable stitches, covered it with a bandaid and out I went to have lunch with my hubby. There was absolutely no down time at all, but I was a little sore and bruised for a couple of days.

I didn't have any down time after it was removed. Wasn't weak whatsoever!
On the downside, I did feel a lot of moving of it and some pain twinges during the procedure. But nothing at all afterwards!

Port removal
I didn;'t have mine removed until about 4 months after chemo was over. Kindof forgot about it. It was day surgery, a non-issue. I was given the option of having it done locally in the surgeon's office or "going under". Naturally I said, "PUT ME OUT!" No pain to speak of. They glue the 2 inch incision together. It healed quickly. It was all a non-issue really.0 -

Hi Stacey, Yeah on finishing Chemo
My first port got infected as it turned out I am alergic to the Cloroprep they used when they installed it.
Other than he had to dig a bit to get the darn thing loose and I could feel it as he pulled it out which was more wierd than painful, once it was out, the pain was mostly over.
I had some tenderness, but I think that was mosly related to my skin being messed up from the alergic reaction. I was in and out of the dr's office in about 20 minutes and then I went about the rest of my day as normal.

I didn't have a port. Took it all on one arm. But from what I heard others say, it's not bad at all. Congrats about finishing chemo!! I know how great that felt for me.
