I felt so bad today

I was at the local grocery store today and was explaining about why I was being fussy about how much to put in each bag. I explained I had breast cancer and the surgery messed things up from the rib cage to the neck. The lady at the register, smiled and nodded. I knew she either knew someone with cancer or had it herself. So I asked if she knew anyone with breast cancer and she said she did. I was so excited to have her tell them about the free cut and style at Jc Penney's this month.

Then the awful question came..."Is it for other cancers, too?" Then I felt all the wind out of my sails and then some. I knew what was coming when I said, no. She said, I had two types of cancer and I get nothing.

I felt so bad. Nothing like inadvertently kicking someone who had two types of cancer down.

    Compassion
    Hi,

The fact is you had compassion for the employee and that is what counts. Freebee's for any disease exclude people. It is not your fault. I don't know where you live or if you are financially even able to, but maybe you could get her a gift certificate to get her hair done. I love to pay it forward when I can, but not everyone can and I understand that. I'm sorry she made you feel bad, she was maybe having a bad day herself. You were still nice to offer.

    You should not
feel bad. You had no way of knowing that she had other types of cancer. You were trying to do a good thing and that is what counts.

    ouch....
I never realized it before. I guess Breast Cancer does get the spotlight over the other cancers. I wish there were something that could be done for your cashier. You were kind to pass on the info to her. I wonder if she knows about the other discussion boards here? Maybe a little comfort that way would help...
