Biopsy results

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
Got the call from my oncologist in Hershey today with the results of the biopsy I had last Tuesday. He said the biopsy came back as inconclusive. He said he did not believe it was from my larynx and, in fact does not know if it is a cancer. Ground glass opacity nodules can do this. He said we can wait and do another scan in six months or have it removed and be done it, I chose to have it removed, he agreed, said that is what he would do in my position. So a load off my mind. He is referring me to a cardio thoracic surgeon in Hershey. I will ask about VATS surgery (have no idea what that is). He also said that the nodule had been there for some time but had grown slightly during the Summer. That;s the reason for the belief that it was cancer. Thanks for all of your support, the knot in my stomach has gone away for now, sure I will get nervous before the surgery. God bless. Denis

    I'd choose "get it out" versus "watch it". I'd be nervous come surgery time, too. Have to admit, I had a knot in my stomach when I read "Biopsy Results" as the thread title. Thanks for the update.

    Git her done and get on with life. So happy to hear this can be resolved so easily (relatively speaking).

    Only us Abi-Normals would be so pleased about another diagnosis requiring surgical intervention. Hey, its NOT the big 'C.'

    Take it out, that’s a choice I can agree with. Better to cut and know then wait and see it grow.

    Did your Dr say anything about cryptogenic organizing pneumonia? AKA bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia?

    I had a persistent cough problem in 2011 that defied diagnosis. An amazing array of tests came up negative until they did a lung function test and a high resolution CT. That radiologist's report also said similar to yours, ground glass opacities, nodules, bronchoectasis, bronchiolectasis etc.

    I had a VATS biopsy, Video Assisted Thoroscopic Surgery, they took 4 wedge resections out of my right lung. VATS is much easier on you than a full thoracotomy, I had three small incisions, and recovered pretty quickly. I spent three days in the hospital and the worst of that experience was the drainage tubes. They can be pretty uncomfortable but you feel so much better once they're removed. I was off work for two weeks and the only trouble I had was that they tell you that you can resume 'normal' activities after two weeks, but I neglected to ask about a return to 'full' activities. That was another 6 weeks post surgery.

    The biopsy was negative for cancer, but positive for BOOP, and was successfully treated with prednisone.

    Surgery will be a breeze... don't worry too much about it.

    I'm going in probably soon for my first biopsy of one lung...but both of my lungs show similar results with PET and CT. Inconclusive scares the bejebbers out of us. Mine is a very slow growing dx...if it isn't a second primary dx in the lung. I'll be praying for you, and let us know what the lung specialist suggest....type of surgery ect. Katie

    that's great news. now you have some weight off your shoulders as well as some big time loss of weight after the removal. all be it a small area it is big time weight loss

    you've been down the surgery road before, this one will be a piece of cake.

    Thanks to you all, Tim, good to hear from you. I spoke with the oncology nurse today, she called to tell me she is setting up my initial visit with the thoracic guy, I asked her about the VATS and she said they do that, if not I would have transferred to John Hopkins. I have looked up the ground glass stuff and it's really heady stuff, what the human body can conjure up. Although the onc did not say it was cancer, he did not know but said if it was was it's extremely low grade and should be excised quite easily. Will keep you all up to date. Denis

    Phew!! Your news sure as hell is good news....
    when I got my original PET scan, they saw a "ground glass" type nodule in me, too...the ENT seemed to dismiss it because I'd smoked in my past. I just learned from you that these things can change, get bigger, etc....I'd get rid of it, too...I'm no good at wait and watch...I tend to never take my eyes/mind off it....

    I am with you Phrannie, get it out. The ground glass thing is odd, it can be so many things and really mimics cancer, or can be nothing at all. The big thing to watch for with these things, i believe, I am going from some studies I read so I might not be accurate, is if it becomes calcified. Than means that it changes into a non cancerous nodule and can be left alone. If it;s not calcified they watch to see if it will. I believe mine was still non calcified, hence the get it out. Denis
