Connection w colon CA?

in Ovarian Cancer #1
I have read some stuff indicating that women w ovarian CA are more likely to also be positive for colorectal. Now I have myself all paranoid since I have lower pelvic pain, rectal pain, intermittent problems w hemorrhoids, rectal bleeding, etc. I will talk w my oncologist about these symptoms, but does anyone have any info or personal experience with this issue? Thanks a lot. Cathy, age 55, ovarian CA.

    I was dx with stage 3c
    I was dx with stage 3c ovarian cancer and I also have rectal bleeding. It comes and goes now but during chemo it ws very heavy. I had bleeding on and off for awhile tho and they told me it might be hemorrhoids. Tell me wht they say I actually thought i was the only one with this... ty Kim

    Hi Cathy
    When I was meeting with my gastroenterologist early this year to make an appointment for a screening colonscopy, he said that as an ovarian cancer survivor, I am at a slightly higher risk for colon cancer. My colonscopy turned out to be fine (no polyps, no cancer) but I have to have my colonscopies every five years (instead of the usual 10) because of my ovarian cancer history. Have you had a colonscopy recently? If not, I think you should talk to your primary doctor about having one scheduled, especially since you're over 50. Your symptoms could very well be happening because of non-cancer reasons, but a colonscopy will confirm that all is well with your large intestines.

    I've had both colon cancer
    I've had both colon cancer and ovarian cancer. I do have a genetic component though, lynch syndrome. I had none of the symptoms you are describing when I had colon cancer. Like ovarian, colon cancer is generally symptomless until later stages. Hemmorhoids can cause much of what you are describing. You should have it checked out, but I wouldn't borrow trouble. Outside of a genetic component, having two different primary cancers is pretty rare.

    There are some genetic mutations that make the owner more likely to develop ovarian and colon cancer. Lynch Syndrome, as already mentioned, and BRCA2 positive. Other known mutations do not predispose the patient to colon cancer.
