Vitamin and supplements
Hope you are all doing well and enjoying the weekend.
I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what types of vitamins and or supplements I should be taking while on chemo.
Right now I take none which I know isn't good. I asked the nurse and all she could tell me was that it's ok to take but couldn't really suggest what to take.
Any ideas are welcome thanks

Vitamins...
Christine....my oncologist has told me not to take any kind of vitamins or supplements or anything with green tea while on chemo...they don't want me taking anything that would make my immune statement "perk up"....so the chemo can do it's thing....but each doctor is different....Personally I wouldn't take ANYTHING without asking your oncologist first...better safe than sorry....

My oncologist told me the same thing as Nancy's. He said that the anti-oxidiants in most vitamins can counteract the chemo as well as the ones in foods and drinks like green tea and so forth. I sure didn't want to block any of the drugs we were using to fight cancer.
Good luck!

Ask your DR
Only your Dr/staff can know what is right for you.
I was told NO multi-vit/min. no soy, no green tea, no grapefruit or pomegranate, no anti-oxidant suppliments (including garlic but fine to cook with fresh garlic). But I was given clearance for my individual vit/min. Being osteopenia for YEARS pre IBC, I was told to keep taking my calcium and vit D, also given permission for mega doses of D as I've been on it for years fall/winter/spring for my SAD, and as I 'feel better/like taking' my Super B was told that was OK also. About 1/2 way through Taxol I developed problems keeping K levels (potassium) above dangerous so it was added in mega doses. K levels are still a bit of a problem to keep up even almost 3 yrs out but it's better and my body 'whispers' to me now when I need to increase for a while.

Christine, I didn't have chemo, but, I did have rads. My rads oncologist said no to any vitamins or supplements. You don't want any cells in your body, especially the cancer cells that might still be lingering around, to get healthy or stronger due to the vitamins.
