New findings are reshaping the understanding of breast cancer, pointing to the use of drugs approved for other cancers. “This is the road map for how we might cure breast cancer in the future,” a researcher said.

    Great article isn't it. I read in the NY Times. I always knew that my type of cancer is what they call Luminal A cancer and that is why I have done so well on hormonal therapy only. Over 17 1/2 years using hormonal drugs only. I used chemotherapy once when diagnose and I never believed it worked. I am so glad that I insisted last spring to retry Faslodex when my oncologist believe that my time with hormonal was over. My tumors were now no longer responding to hormonal drugs. Yet my first scan was stable and my 2nd one two weeks ago showed stable with regression. Now much regression but I will take 1 mm of regression over progression.

    "Two other types of breast cancer, accounting for most cases of the disease, arise from the luminal cells that line milk ducts. These cancers have proteins on their surfaces that grab estrogen, fueling their growth. Just about everyone with estrogen-fueled cancer gets the same treatment. Some do well. Others do not.

    The genetic analysis divided these cancers into two distinct types. Patients with luminal A cancer had good prognoses while those with luminal B did not, suggesting that perhaps patients with the first kind of tumor might do well with just hormonal therapy to block estrogen from spurring their cancers while those with the second kind might do better with chemotherapy in addition to hormonal therapy."

    Dr. Matthew Ellis in the article is the one with the theory of rebooting hormonal drugs. It was approved in the 2008 SABC symposium. I did try it but Femara refused to work and I had more progression on it. However, down the road, I would like to retry that theory again.

    I was surprise Olga that there were no other replies to your post except mine. I thought this article worth reading and it was interesting to read about TNBC and how it relates to ovarian and etc.

    Now I am more than convinced that chemo isn't for my type of breast cancer.

    No other comments from other ladies?

    Olga, I read the NY Times article. It was very interesting and I am glad that you posted about it. So much more research needs to be done in terms of research. I want breast cancer a thing of the past for my daughters' sakes. xoxoxox Lynn

    Running today to get my faslodex/xgeva injections and giving a neighbor a ride to her iron infusion later. Heard about this on the news and just read what I could decipher (lol) of the original article. Soooo exciting! I feel that we are on the verge of a revolution in cancer care--so much exciting research. Thanks so much for the posting!

    I had read an article in today's paper about this study, but it wasn't as in -depth as this one. The part about triple-negative, which is what i have, was particulary interesting to me. Hopefully my young adult daughter won't need to deal with this horrible disease.

    Yes, it is opening the way for trials using ovarian cancer drugs on triple neg cancers. Praying this helps all of our triple neg friends here.

    Nature paper
    It is not an easy to process paper. I looked at it briefly, really probably to read more than one time to completely understand. I looked at affiliated organizations and number of scientist being involved in this study for several years it has been an amazing effort across the country and internationally. It break through for the future patients and early stages. Er/pr positive is divided into major groups and will be treated differently in the future. Triple negative also very interesting study and promises to use ovarian cancer drugs for treatment of TNBC. Kari is currently taking Doxil, an ovarian cancer drug.
    I am going to discuss it with my doctor on Friday, however we have been following some elements - taking Chemo instead of hormonal. I still hope I am between this A &B, hard to accept being on cytotoxic Chemo for the rest of my life. There are several Er/pr CSN sisters who are currently undergoing

    I was happy to hear about the triple negative breast cancer being treated with OV c drugs because of its similarity on mutation - since this type of bc gets little treatment options. At the same time, it worried me a little that they find a relationship between the two types of cancers. This means the risks of getting the other are higher. But don't all breast cancer types increase the risk of gynecology cancers too (especially ovarian)? Both cancers run in my family (breast cancer more). Although this is an advancement in research, I pray for a cure soon. These drugs are still really heady on the body and have also caused deaths. Although chemo saves lives, it is still a very painful and tough experience to go through, for hope.

    I hope the research continues and we find a cure soon.
