in Kidney Cancer #1
Had my first radiation on my rib this afternoon. 4 more next week then 3 on my spine. NTI. nothing to it. Now my question is ,"Has anyone else had radiation?" I don't know if this has come up. Now I want to know the results others have experienced.

    Radiation
    My cancer had spread to my leg just before my sutent/ mdx trial and they used radiation on leg to slow growth but after 1 week worth of radiation I still had progressed, so I was prescribed 5 more doses but was never scanned after that because of start of trial. Believe it or not they didn't scan my leg before trial. I mentioned it to my Dr giving me the trial and he agreed that it prob needs scanned, so in two weeks I will have my 6 week scans and they will scan my leg and maybe I will know more about if the radiation had helped.

    Hey Fox - I don't have any first hand experience but I have met a couple on this journey. They got a great report yesterday on the MDX-Votrient trial, and I talked to them yesterday at the hospital. I know he had radiation back in February. Vicki blogs on caringbridge and goes into great detail about his experience. She also posts on ACOR.

    It might be helpful for you to check out his experience, particularly the radiation in February.

    Interesting
    There is another at my clinic who has had mets in his upper arms and thighs. He has had radiation. I haven't had a full body scan since last year. Just chest abdomen and pelvis. My radiation oncologist says that he is very aggressive and he expects excellent results in my rib and spine. It is interesting as the extremities seem to be unusual or at least less common than the trunk and head. Thanks tacycarts.

    I found it aweful odd that they neglected to scan my leg even after my wife wheel chaired me into my appt. sorry my radiation had no real results for your question but I just thought that I'd throw it out there. I did not have any ill effects from the whole radiation process. So maybe that is helpful in itself. Good luck fox!!

    In my case, I don't question the process so much anymore because the answer is that "this is the study protocol." Glad you didn't have any problems with the radiation. I generally breeze through these things too. I seem to have a very good tolerance. Especially when I know up front what is going on and what might happen. I really do expect this to be the same.

    update
    I am about half way through the radiation. (another cat scan before each one,ugh!) Anywho, since my last infusion, zometa, and radiation, I have had all my back pain go away! It had been there since June. This must be a good thing. I'm even thinking of meeting friends in New Hampshire next weekend to ride the Kancamagus highway. I do worry about my bones being a little brittle but I'll speak to my Dr. today....At the clinic where I get my radiation,one of the oncology nurses met with me for some kind of pt. screening. She informed me that they had a social worker if I would like to talk to her. So, I had to ask, "Why? does she need some help?" I told her that I would be available for her when ever she needs me. I think we could teach alot of people about coping skills.

    The pain being gone is so super. I sure hope you get a chance to take a long ride on your Honda!! Just kiddin I'm sure it isnt a Honda , I just wanted to rile you up!! Lol Ride on Fox, try to forget your problems for a weekend.

    Your reputation undoubtedly preceded you Fox. She wanted some pointers.

    Last week at Hopkins. John was receiving his infusion (and sleeping) when a massage/health therapist arrived and gave me a massage, compliments of Hopkins. John woke up as this was going on and said, "What am I doing wrong?"

    Maybe the social worker also was a massage therapist!

    Got to keep a sense of humor
    I try to keep my pt's and caregivers at ease. My radiation therapist introduced herself. She said," Hi, I'm Corky." Told her we will get along fine as I am quirky too!"

    Dr. asked me how I was. "Any pain?" I told him nope. Asked "Any fatigue?" I said "I'm just a little lazy." He apologized and told me that I am gonna get hit with radiation fatigue big time. But I think he meant next week when he does my spine. We'll see. I think I can handle almost anything if I know up front. Besides, I have plans. Just in case, is there anything good on TV next week?

    Fox, you sure do crack me up. My mom is down in the dumps since she found out she had mets to lungs two weeks ago. I am going to let her read your story and and show her how positive you are, along with the others on this board. I crack up all the time... So glad your pain is gone and things are working out for you! Keep the chin up, the hands on the bike and the jokes on the board!

    Just remember, there is a lot of humor here. Tomorrow is Gary's joke day. We can't express enough that negativity and worrying is only a waste of energy. Having worked in hospitals, nursing facilities, and home care for over 30 years, I have watched my share of people dying. Those at peace pass away at peace. Those bitter and angry die the same way. When my day comes ,I plan to be the former. And when I pass away, and it won't be from kidney cancer, I am saving a couple of jokes.
