I've been on a food adventure... :)

I know it's a little early since I'm just at the beginning of my 3rd week post chemo, but I am SO hungry all the time. Last Friday I was able to return my dentures to my mouth, and tho it stung I forced myself to drink my VHC and Ensure, instead of tubing it...Anyway yesterday I went to Costco and tried nearly everything they were offering bites of....Ate nearly a complete Greek Yougur (peach)...then ate peaches themselves...tried a little stuffed green pepper. Everything stung by the the 4th bite, but I could taste it all (YIPPEE)....I also got up this morning and made Baked French Toast for hubby....it was ok till the 4th bite, then the cinnamon got to me....but still I could taste it.

Not giving up my VHC or Ensure yet, but I'll damn well get rid of this tube, I'm not going to be needing it anymore...no more treatments = no more mouth sores, right?? :) I'm feeling free-er everyday....now I think I'll take my Poodle (yes I got a new puppy) for a walk in the park...it's 80 degrees and glorious outside.

    Hey Phrannie,

You sound like you are off to a good start (so early). I try anything, but most get the “lard label”. Some fruits and vegetables taste pretty good, but most meats are yuck. You sampled quite a variety, which has to be a great sign for returning taste buds.

    Good luck, good eats.

    Best,

    Matt

Wow I was so happy to see you raiding Cosco and their samples. I know how bad you wanted to taste food and disgard the tube for the mouth and you have made it. Yes its a blessing to eat again, granted small portions and not quite like before cancer but just to taste something is great. So call the Doc tell him to schedule the tube removal, and swing by your favorite diner, dive or drive in and enjoy. I have done Chick Filet, Taco Bueno and local Pub as mentioned in a previous blog. I have had Dianes spagetti with garlic bread and tonight left over Mac and Cheese with a Nathon Hot Dog, still eating small portions, probably a 1/3 rd of what I used to be able to eat but thats fine, just to eat is a blessing. Im so proud of you and how you were there for all of us during this Bus ride and I always looked forward to your blogs. So EAT to your hearts desire, you deserve it and I look forward to the day all of us on this site can eat and taste as we did before cancer.

for you, it took longer for my taste to come back, and I'm still on soft foods and probably always will be, but, I can deal with that, what I do eat is scrumptous!

    So glad for you
Costco! I remember getting a sample (cracker and cheese) and having to go straight to the garbage can and spit it out, too dry. Enjoy the adventure.

    Again-
There you go, again, Phrannie, making my H&N experience one a Pushover lived! At your stage, I was crawling with pancakes drenched in syrup and butter. You're over 3-months ahead of me! Yep- I feel small, and am both impressed and very happy for you.

    Eats!
Great to see you're making progress. I have been lucky in that my cancer missed my mouth. I never had the sores, or taste or saliva problems. But I'm glad you are overcoming your obstacles, as we all knew you would. Rick.

On the prowl is a good way to describe what I'm up to.....LOLOL
Last night I whipped up a mix of summer squash, zuchinni, Italian stewed tomatoes, green peppers and onion....threw it all in a pot and cooked it till the squash was done. Only put a little garlic salt in, no pepper or anything....and I managed two bowls of the stuff....the first bowl I even put a tiny bit of parmasan cheese on it. I was so sure it would be a stinger, but it wasn't (didn't eat the tomatoes, tho). Hubby thought it was a bland dish, I thought I'd been sent to heaven, LOL.

I'm really pushing myself I know....pushing past the sting, cuz I want to eat so bad...Cinnamon stings too much to push past, but zuchinni doesn't :)...

Now I don't have to go to the neighbors and watch them eat, and have them describe their meal to me...HA!! I can munch down a little on my own....thinking of fixing something with shrimp in it tonight....shrimp were something I was able to eat until July, so they aren't all that stingie I don't think.

If anybody wants to talk food I'll talk with ya...it's still my favorite subject :).

Those shrimp likely won't be a problem but shrimp sauce might! Happy eating :-)

I love to talk about food
I love to talk about food too and I am glad you are tasting things. My taste is not coming back as soon as I would like but I keep eating. Made stuffed peppers for supper, we'll see if I can taste. The thing I have tasted the most so far was a breakfast burrito from McDonalds. They taste very good to me. Shrimp was something I tasted thru out my treatment. I ate Shrimp Fried Rice and the shrimp always tasted good. You sound like me, wanting to eat so bad, I wanted to get rid of the tube. That was my inspiration to eat and it worked, as of today I am tubeless.....

You Asked For It.... Shells Shrimp & Garlic Pasta
    Ingredients

    8 ounces linguine
    2 tablespoons butter
1 pound shrimp -- cleaned and halved
    1/2 cup Olive oil
    1/2 cup dry White Wine
    8 cloves garlic -- crushed
2 dashes soy sauce DO NOT OVERDO, BUT IMPORTANT
    2 cup heavy cream
    salt and pepper

    Instructions

Cook the linguine and butter in salted boiling water until almost al dente. Drain and set aside. Combine olive oil, wine, garlic, salt and pepper, soy sauce and heavy cream in a large saucepan. Add the shrimp, stir and add the linguine. Stirring gently, cook over medium high heat for almost 10 minutes, or until shrimp is done and linguine is perfectly done. Serve at once. It will initially seem a little runny, but will set up and become a wonderful sauce. DO NOT USE HALF AND HALF! Don't cook it the full 10 minutes if it doesn't need it.

Adjust to what you feel you can tolerate...
