THE surgery on Tuesday 9/11

in Esophageal Cancer #1
I was diagnosed as Stage IIa EC and went through 6 weeks of chemo (taxol/carboplatin) and radiation at the University of Michigan. My tumor has all but disappeard and I am feeling pretty well again finally.

This Tuesday, Dr. Orringer will perform my THE surgery.

I see you all again in a few weeks (hopefully the CSN moderators have regained their senses about what is important on this board and once again allowed everyone to share their thoughts and ideas by then)

    I remember my thoughts well when I was a couple days away from my surgery. Wondering how things will come out and how long it will take to recover. You are certainly in good hands. Dr Orringer is the clear leader in the development of the THE surgical approach and University of Michigan clearly knows how to handle the recovery process.

    I am looking forward to hearing from you after you have completed your surgery this Tuesday. We will mark the calendar to send positive thoughts your way.

    Have some patience on the recovery. I had my THE on June 5, had a moderate complication, but I am finally "feeling human" again. Enough so that my husband and I are on a 2 week driving vacation.

    I remember how nervous I was before surgery but all went well. Don,t get impatient with recovery it takes awhile but remember it is worth it. All the best,here from you when you are up to it post surgery.

    In good hands at UM..
    I had my surgery (IL) at Rochester-Mayo on 7-25-2012, and I'm six weeks out, and I am starting to feel better. You have to experiment with food to find what works. The only reason why I didn't go to UM is that I'm living in NW Iowa, but am a UM grad...a long time ago..GO BLUE!! Good luck to you.

    You will be up walking
    You will be up walking around the nurses station the next day, in all likelihood. Please know many good thoughts are flowing your way. My husband was hiking the Colorado trails 8 weeks later. Do what they tell you to....let a little time pass and you will begin to feel betteR. . God bless!

    I came through surgery ok. The first few days were a balancing act trying to get pain medicine at right levels and blood pressure high enough. Pathology report came back with no lymph nodes showing cancer and the margins were clean. Tomorrow I have my barium swallow test and hopefully I'll get to go home. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I know the recovery process is still a long one.

    Great news my friend! Hang in there, it will take some time, as I'm finding out. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago. Stay positive!!

    It is great to hear that things have gone well!!!! A clear path report is great that means no follow up chemo and you can focus on recovering and learning how to eat with your new digestive system. You will be tired for a while when you get home and eating will take some time but be patient with yourself, your over the hardest part. Hoping for a good swallow test tomorrow!!!

    So glad all went well. The worst is behind ,since you had a good pathology report.

    I don't know if anyone has mentioned that your sleeping habits will probably change. After surgery most of us have to sleep elevated. I sleep on a 7" wedge pillow with my regular pillow on top. This is to prevent acid reflux. Pillows alone don't keep you elevated enough. At night is the only time I have reflux.

    Great news! Its been eight
    Great news! Its been eight months since my THE and I can still remember how happy I was to get the leak test done and passed and be headed home.

    Great post op news! Now relax and take control. Rest. Heal. Get better. Such a relief that it's behind you. Now you just fight on.
