SWIMMING DURING TREATMENT

Swimming
You can't swim with a picc line. They wouldn't let me go in the water once they did the planning. I can't remember why, but I certainly remember how crushed I was when they said no. I'm a surfer and it really is what I live for. But at least I'm alive to surf again. You have a good point about the exercise, try to do something. I did not and I think that's why it took me so long to recover.0 -
Loose clothing
There will likely be a point in treatment when you won't want anything tight around your body anywhere. That will pass. The first few weeks should be okay. I didn't show any burning until my fourth week. On the other hand, my nerve endings were affected and I didn't like anything even fabric too close to my body. I don't think I could have enjoyed any kind of a swim suit for any length of time after the second week. I wore my husband's underwear for a while and then bought men's soft underwear in an even larger size with even softer fabric. But I am quite blonde and thin skinned. Not everyone is the same.
Good luck.

I was told "no" to swimming
I was told "no" to swimming until after the burns healed, but that was a swimming pool with chlorine. You do have to be concerned about getting any type of infection because your immune system will most likely be compromised by the chemo.
I did make myself keep moving during the weeks of treatment. I drank tons of water so it meant a lot of trips to the bathroom. I would go upstairs to the second floor bathroom every time just to get in extra steps. I did a little on the elliptical but not much since I was losing weight and couldn't afford to burn too many calories. But do keep moving! It helps. (My 2¢)0 -
I have swam with a port beforesephie said:absolutely NOT
the kicking of the legs would have killed me by pulling on the anal tissue and the water could cause something like diaper rash if you do not pat it dry and get it really dry. i had trouble walking, the movement was painful. sephie
Just wait a couple weeks after you get your port put in, and you should be okay.0 -

I had a Picc line. I was told not to even get it wet. I had to wrap a towel around my arm then my husband would wrap Saran Wrap around the towel. Then I would bathe with my arm hanging out the side of the tub and just use my left arm. What an ordeal...and I did have the chemo fanny pack 24/7 so Esmeralda (what I named the fanny pack) would be on the floor next to the tub. I haven't thought about it for awhile. I'm sitting here shaking my head thinking, "did I really do that for 7 weeks". Aghh... I thank God that I am here able to remember and talk about it though. Coming up to 3 years on 9/11/12.
Martha aren't you coming up to your 4 year mark? I remember our day/month weren't far apart but we were a year apart.

Congratulations on your upcoming 3-year anniversary! I hope you are doing well and that you plan to celebrate. Thank you for thinking of me, and yes, my 4-year anniversary is on 9/9. I can't believe it's been 4 years already. Hubs and I are going for a nice brunch and a drive in the convertible on Sunday--not a big celebration, but a nice relaxing way to spend the day.
You and I are a couple of the veterans around here now. I'm glad you keep in touch on this site and continue to offer others encouragement and advice. I am so happy that we are both doing well and I hope it gives the newbies lots of hope. Keep moving forward, dear friend, and here's hoping you celebrate many, many more happy anniversaries!0 -

Congrats on your 4 year anniversay, what a blessing! I'll report my news as soon as I return from MD Anderson on 9/19. I can't wait for the lovely barium cocktails in prep for the CT scans. Thank you for the prayers! I would love to meet you too someday! My husband keeps saying he is going to retire in a couple of years--if and when that happens, I am planning a long road trip dedicated to meeting some of my forum and blogger friends. I will definitely put Colorado on my itinerary and I thank you for the invitation! We are going to California in a few weeks for a wedding and I plan to meet a couple people out there--I am SO excited!
I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers for all good news on the 9/19 tests. May everything come back clean and clear, as I'm sure it will!
Hugs--

liz,Your ct will be all clear ....all fine. i feel it. i am at MDA on the 23 and 24. just after you . i have procto. so here comes the 3 enemas. .. i was 3 years post in July .... i actually asked them to give me the procto because they determined that Radiation team would decide if i needed more proctos. i told them that NCCN guidelines (which my colorectal doc is on the board) said to do at least an anoscope each year until 5 year NED and they said everyone is different but they booked me for the procto to appease my worry. hugs to you , sephie0 -

I just want to wish you all the best when you go to MDA later this month. May your scope be squeaky clean!0
