It's not just the genes that matter

More than Hopeful
This is hopeful. The sad part of it is that Francis Pottenger recognized this back in the 1940's. He also recognized that these switches that affect the expression of our genes are controlled by diet and lifestyle. You can read all about it in the book "Pottenger's Prophecy: How Food Resets Genes for Wellness or Illness" by Gray L. Graham, BA, NTP. This is all based on the fairly new science of Epigenetics. It is a shame that medical community doesn't recognize the huge influence diet and lifestyle plays on our health and their ability to neutralize chronic diseases. They are always looking for a drug to do it.0 -

You are so smart! If

You are so smart! If I lived close to you I'd just bring some mice over to your house for you to experiment with. I'm sure you would find a cure.0 -

My dogs would kill the mice.
Pretty sure the "cure" is getting your body really healthy and strong. Seems too simple.0 -

Also, unfortunately, all we know about diet affecting epigenetics at this point is generalizations and conjecture. We don't have any magic bullets or specific targets yet. I had always believed I was doomed to breast cancer because my mother died of it in her early 40's and all of her sisters of cancer, also early. When I passed menopause still healthy, I assumed that the diet rich in raw and fresh cruciferous vegetables given me by my stepmother from the age of 5 (and adhered to since) had "epigenetically" saved me. Alas, not so, as ovarian cancer hit me at 63. Maybe it delayed the onset; most likely I'll never know for sure.
I agree with you that this area should have been under intensive investigation much, much earlier.0
