    As for HPV. I was tested when diagonosed and came out negative. OBGYN tested and came out negative. I honestly do not fit the profile of the other things except being a former smoker.

    I'm baffled. But I know HPV can be dormant and then show up.

    I still think there is something else out there causing anal cancer. Just using logic. The world is full of smokers. Millions of them. Male homsexual intercourse would result in a lot more cases if that type of intercourse were truly a root cause. I'm glad it doesn't, just saying logically it would.

    That leaves HPV and I believe something else that is not known yet.

    All I can say is that I thank God everyday that this type of cancer has a high cure rate.

    Thank you!

    The whole HPV/anal cancer thing still confuses me too. My GYN always does an HPV test with my annual pap smear. It's been negative the last few years. I think they could probably link smoking to about any disease that exists. It is definitely poison. I agree that there is a lot more that needs to be learned about anal cancer.

    I am curious if your "warts" were present in the area of the urethra and vagina. As you know Martha, my pcp dr said my "spots" look like polyps in those areas aforementioned. I have had cryo-surgery for abnormal cells in my vagina and cervical areas. I know I should not worry, but this new discovery is causing me to be very concerned that cancer is trying to show its ugly face again. Has anyone else with anal cancer caused by HPV ever had the brief thought that this cancer was a punishment for things we did in our younger days? Or is that just me with stinking thinking??

    Martha, I hope your procedure is quick and painless, and removes all possiblities of this coming back as cancer. Here's a for you...and I'll send prayers your direction.

    2-week post-op appointment
    Just wanted to let everyone know that I saw my colorectal doc this morning and everything looks great. I told her the area where the skin tag was removed was healing slowly and she said it's because of the radiated skin. I was glad that she didn't feel the need to do a DRE or scope on me this morning. She's probably saving that for my appt. in 4 weeks! The biopsy results were negative for HPV, which only means that the virus was inactive at the time and not that I do not carry the virus. I hope it stays inactive! She is going to continue following me every 3 months, for which I am relieved.

    How are you doing these were removed?

    My radiation oncologist told me the radiation would get rid of all the anal warts I have now, and he seemed to indicate they would not return. I've had several surgeries to remove them, but they kept coming back. I had surgery about every six or seven months...that's how my cancer was found so early.

    At any rate, will you update me on how all this turned out?

    Anal warts
    I am doing very well since having the anal warts removed in September 2010. However, I must disagree with what your rad onc told you because in my case, the warts were not present until 2 years after my treatment ended. I received radiation (30 treatments) in August/September 2008. I went in for my 3-month anoscope and DRE in September 08 and my colorectal doc discovered them at that time. I had just had a colonoscopy 3 months before that, done by the same doctor. She examined my anal canal during the colonoscopy and the warts were not there then. They seemed to have developed rather fast. She told me they were not cancer but that they must be removed so that they didn't become cancerous. I got along well after the surgery and have had no more warts seen on subsequent exams (knock on wood).

    You are welcome for the information. If I can provide anything else, please just ask. I don't know it all, I've just been at this longer than most and have learned a lot along the way. I am thinking all good thoughts for you and I'm sure you will get through this!
