Ascites experience ?

Hello :
This is my first post in this board although registered few months back.am a caregiver for a liver mets from colon cancer patient who s been having ascites. Just have a question for the members on ascites and would be great if you could respond. . Have read several information on internet about Ascites , but those information are really depressing..

Just curious to know if Ascites occurs , Does it go away at all ? Or Does it keeps returning after the abdominal tapping ...I read that Chemo will cure AScites..But any idea about approximate Timeframe when the chemo will resolve ascites ? Does it differ based on chemo regimen ? Couple of cases i have read that it got resolved in one or two rounds of chemotheraphy...Has any one taken months to resolve ?

Appreciate if you could take some time to share your views/experience?

    I haven't really had this condition that I can remember - so I don't have any viable info to contribute. It is possible that other members are stumped as well and don't know how to respond.

    Other folks who log throught the day and beyond may have some additional input that might be of value. I hope so, because I cannot even speculate on this.

    While I have not had this condition, from what I have read Ascites is not a 'disease' unto itself but is a result of another issue...in this case it may be the liver mets.

    For the best information, you should ask the patient's doctor the questions you have asked here.

    I have only known 2 others who have had this as a complication and neither posts here any more.

    Wish I could be more helpful, but your best choice is always to ask the doctor.

    I haven't personally dealt with ascites but have experience with friends and family.

    Unfortunately for some, the ascites continued to return and draining was a regular event.

    I do have a friend currently dealing with this who had her abdomen drained 3 weeks ago followed with 10 days of chemo pills (ovarian cancer). Her counts are down and so far the ascites has not been a problem.

    If the person you are looking after is interested in any alternative methods for ascites Traditional Chinese Medicine might be an option. I do know a number of people through my cancer clinic who have been helped enormously with ascites. They haven't necessarily been cured or gone into remission, but they have been made much more comfortable with getting rid of the excess fluids which is done without invasive methods.

    It's hard to give a time frame on any treatment as we are all different and responses vary. Even Dr.'s don't know for sure how a patient will respond to a treatment.
