Anyone here use Nystatin?

I think the thrush is back, and my doctor told me to use Nystatin for it (which I already had). He said if it doesn't clear up in a week, we'll try Diflucan (again). Does anyone have info on how long Nystatin takes to work?

As the thrush takes hold, it makes it tough for me to swallow at times... and my speech pathologist appointment is on Friday! I will be super bummed if I fail just because of the stupid thrush! So I have my fingers crossed that Nystatin usually shows improvement in 3-4 days?

Thanks for any info you can pass along!

    Lived on it!
It usually helped within 2 days. Do the entire treatment. I went through 3 prescriptions during treatment and there were refills, I used those during recovery.

Be sure to take as directed
Hi, Laralyn. I had the same persistent thrush after chemo. The print out that came with the Rx said to swish and spit but the actual bottle said to swish and swallow. Try that. Hang in there! Been there done that, ick!

    I've
used it, after about a week on it, my hair started to come out and is now thin and lifeless, I stopped taking it..Dr doesn't think the nystatin caused it, maybe reaction with other drugs I'm on, can't convince me of that, because now that I'm not taking it, the hair loss has stopped...are you on any steroids? If so, rinse mouth, throat very throughly after taking, steroids are the main cause of thrush

    Steroids
I've always wondered the cause of my thrush, and I really had it bad. There were certain exam periods where the medical team wouldn't even attempt to look in my mouth. Yes, the directions on my Nystatin were to swallow, but I just couldn't do it. So I just swished and spit it out, then went back to bed. What an awful time that was !

    Nystatin
Yep, I'm using it right now (for the 2nd time). Gotta say I'm not impressed. I'm on my 3rd 400ml bottle and it doesn't seem to be working at all. I'll be seeing my doc this week, and I'm going to have to insist (and beg) that he gives me something else. The thrush seems to be the only thing that is keeping me from being able to swallow.

Believe this was my 3rd bout with thrush...lose track. I just had Nystatin but also had Fluc..... something to go with it. I noticed a marked improvement after just 2 days.
Radiologist suggested swallowing just in case the thrush proceeded down the throat. It was nasty so half the time I swallowed and the other half I spit. Counting on good news from you Friday so "hang tough".

I hope I'm in the "it works" category!
I feel like it's starting to take effect. I hope it is, and it's not just wishful thinking on my part. I realized this morning that I can swallow water normally now (in continuous swallows rather than one sip at a time), and I'm going to keep doing that to try to strengthen my swallow before my appointment on Friday!

I used it and it didn't work
I'm beginning to think nothing is going to work. I'm currently on noxafil which is incredibly expensive - had to do the whole hoop jumping with the insurance company first - but I'm using it and still have it. Nystatin did nothing for me and 3 founds of difflucan before that. I'm going to get probiotics, eating walnuts and taking zinc. I'm not sure what else I can do. I only had radiation - no chemo and I was done with rads 5/1/12. I hope someone comes up with something for this for those of us that are medicine resistant or something....LOL! Good luck Laralyn!!!

I did not have thrush all
I did not have thrush all this time, now 4 weeks after treatment i am getting it. My doc prescribed nystatin. I have started using it since yesterday. I hope it works. I have also started to take my pro biotic pills,

Laralyn, did your thrush go away? Any advice you could give us to make sure it goes away?

    Thanks,

    Sam

    Turns out...
...it wasn't thrush this time. The doctor told me to stop taking Nystatin to see if it got worse, and it didn't. When he looked in my mouth, he said it wasn't thrush, but was ongoing mouth cell death from the chemo and radiation. He said dehydration may be a part of it too. Weeks later, I still have a white/yellow patch on my tongue.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! Both times I had thrush while in treatment, they gave me Diflucan and it worked well.

As of today, yes I am. They looked in my mouth this morning and said oh you need something stronger than the Magic Mouthwash so hopefully the nystatin will help. Everything was hurting to eat so hopefully this kicks in because I want to keep eating.
