Clean colonoscopy!

in Anal Cancer #1
I finished treatment on 11/11, have had two followup appointments with my oncologist and colorectal surgeon. Both recommended a colonoscopy. Well, today was the day and everything was good! Of course the prep wasn't pleasant, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

I am very relieved and grateful. And, I won't have to have another one for 3 years!!! Whoo Hoo!

    Congrats on the clean scope! I'm very happy for you and glad you don't have to do that again for 3 years. The longest I've been able to go without one is 2 years so far, but hoping to stretch them out from here on. Enjoy that feeling of relief and do something nice for yourself that doesn't involve Gatorade and massive quantities of laxatives!

    I had a colonoscopy in November 2011 and they removed three polyps. I have a family history of colon polyps. I have been having colonoscopies since I was 50. I am now 62. You are absolutely correct the prep is the absolute worst part of the procedure. I do not have to have another one for 3 years also.

    Great News! I wish you continued great news. I had my last colonoscopy on 5-14-12 and had 3 polyps removed. The dr said they were not considered actual polyps but more like irritated areas from usage, where there is consistant rubbing. He gave me the option to have the next colonoscopy in 3 or 5 years. I think I'll go with 3. Lori

    I completed TX May 4 - 9 weeks out! I go for a 2nd trip to colorectal surgeon July 30 (he said what he saw was scar tissue). Hopefully, he thinks the same thing the next trip. I have a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis August 12. How long after treatment did you all have your first colonoscopy? Any tips on how to best prepare for that experience? My booty was MISERABLE that evening!!!!! Does it help to eat lightly the week before? I will consider any suggestions!

    I had a lot of trouble with my first two colonoscopy preps and the sore behind. I said something to the nurse after the 2nd one and she suggested using the medicated wipes rather than toilet paper the night of the prep. It doesn't have to be a name brand. Anything with the witch hazel (I think that's the med in preperation H pads) will work. That made a HUGE difference for me. The 3rd time was the charm. It was a MUCH better experience. (Well, except for the fact that he found cancer, but it is good that he found it so I can't complain.)

    I just had a colonoscopy on June 5th. and I ate light for a couple of days prior to the scope, which I think helped. Also, I took 2 ducolax tablets the night before I began the prep the next day. The prep I used calls for 2 ducolax tablets @ 3 p.m. the day of the prep. Take the two the night before helped my system get a headstart on being cleaned out.

    Thanks for the idea about taking two of the Dulcolax the night before, Martha. That's a great idea. My prep calls for 4 tablets the afternoon prior to the exam and I find it very difficult to do that. I'll check with the doctor the next time around and see if I can take two of them the night before instead.

    Thanks for all your comments. I hate the taste of Gatorade, so my doc gave me MoviPrep to use. My problem was a RAW butt before and after. I have a sneaky suspicion that part of it was the prep because I used baby wipes consistently. It seemed highly citric and acidic. Maybe my butt is just extra sensitive? LOL

    I also had a BIG issue with (ahem) leakage during the prep, very watery. Sorry, TMI! I will be shopping for new underwear soon! ;)

    do not use wipes
    for all that need to know: wipes and toilet paper hurt. use water bottle to spray after bm then pat dry with super soft cloth. congrats on good news. sephie

I keep thinking that I will become less anxious with time, but so far, that's not the case. :/

    Isn't it interesting that there is such a variety preferred/prescribed preps? My directions from my surgical oncologist this time around was FAR better than the first time around. Prep day included: clear liquids only, 4 Ducolax at 3:00 and a half a gallon of a Gatorade-Miralax cocktail between 4 and 6. I got that down with ease. But then again, I don't mind super cold blue Gatorade! Much better than those NASTY all-liquid concoctions that I had to get down the first time.

    I don't think anyone knows exactly what a relief it is unless they've been there. Family is super supportive, but they just don't 'get it' like ya'll do!
