counting down the days til surgery

in Kidney Cancer #1
In 10 days I am going to be at Fox Chase Cancer Center getting a partial nephrectomy laprascopically from the back. They're doing it that way because of all the scar tissue from previous surgeries. I don't know what to expect because I have not found any information on this procedure. I am really curious about how much pain I'm going to be in and how long the recovery time is going to be. If anybody knows anything about this procedure please let me know what to expect.

I am REALLY starting to get scared.

    Diane,

    Sorry I can not help you with your specific surgery, I suspect going from the back is more difficult because of the spine, but should involve less cutting of fat and muscle which is where the pain arises. In any event the surgery is no 4th of July picnick (no pun intended). All of us on the board have had the surgery and the most positive thing I can say about it is that it beats the alternative. After a week or so of recovery the pain does become more managable and in a month or 2 you should be back to normaal activity, albeit a little slower. This was my first and only surgery and I was sweating it out like Arnold Schwatzanager in the movie Junior. Its been almost 10 years and I can hardly remember the pain. Yeah

    Surgery
    I had a partial nephrectomy traditional surgery from my left side last September. There was some pain the first three days, but I had a morphine button which provided instant relief. That would also make me really sleepy so when visitors would drop by and I did not feel like talking, just push the button and you soon forget about them being there.

    I understand that laprascoptic surgeries are less painful, so someone else will need to answer to what you might expect.
