Will be thinking of you,
Jennifer
and in much better shape! I have a question about taking probiotics with antibiotics. Do they diminish the efficacy of the antibiotics? I always wondered about that.
Keep well and as Nancy said, Stay AWAY from that cat!

That is such a good question Renee! I had to go back and research it myself. Since the hospital was giving me the probiotics 3 X day, I figured that they must not diminish the efficacy of the antibiotics. Reading about them, probiotics do not diminish the efficacy of antibiotics but antibiotics may diminish the effects of probiotics. Best advice is to stagger the two and make sure you are taking them about 3 hrs apart.
"Benefits of Probiotics and Antibiotics
Probiotics can actually be beneficial for people taking antibiotics. Antibiotics kill bacteria indiscriminately, which means that the healthy bacteria already living in your intestines are also killed. This can disrupt your digestive tract and lead to diarrhea. Taking probiotics when you are also taking antibiotics can effectively prevent this antibiotic-related diarrhea, Science Daily reports. Patients taking antibiotics are also susceptible to intestinal infections after the antibiotics are stopped, as there are no "healthy" bacteria to crowd out the infectious strains. Probiotics can also aid the prevention of these post-antibiotic infections.
Interaction of Probiotics and Antibiotics
While probiotics, however, do not decrease the effectiveness of antibiotics, antibiotics can kill the bacteria found in probiotic supplements. As a result, if you are taking antibiotics and probiotics, you should take your probiotic supplement two to three hours after taking your antibiotics, the University of Maryland Medical Center explains. This will encourage the survival of beneficial bacteria."

I've had the same question...thanks for doing the research for us. It's also especially useful right now...my hubby has been running a fever for 6 days now and antibiotics for 3 days now. We'll start the probiotics today.
I'm really glad you're home, and hope your gut survives all these challenges.

Also, my physician recommended asking the pharmacist about the most appropriate lactobacillus probiotic. Danny said the Walgreen's pharmacist suggested one that is freeze dried and has the most active cultures. I wasn't up to going to Walgreens, but I guess I believe him...lol.
My doc said no yogurt has as much lactobacillus present, so he said I can eat yogurt too, but I have to take my probiotic three times a day.
Just thought I'd share for everyone else having gut issues due to meds.
P.S. My arm looks so awesome today. I can't tell you how relieved we are!0 -

Eileen,
sorry I have not visited you at the hospital, taking several days off. I am glad that everything is under control and you are on the way to a full recovery.
Thank you for birthday wishes, I saved you a piece of cake. It is ok to eat it kefir or acidophilus drink.
